Australians love their tennis. Obviously, the Australian Open is our favourite time to remember this and we are all about tennis for an entire fortnight each year. (Also, if Channel 7 hasn’t told you who your favourite My Kitchen Rules contestant will be by the end of it … I just don’t know what TV you are going to be watching for the next three to four months.)
Then, in the aftermath of the Australian Open we proceed to frequent the courts to show that we could probably be big tennis stars if we wanted to be (well I know that my backhand improved immensely just watching Roger Federer play.)
We also love the players themselves. We were sad to see Lleyton Hewitt retire from tennis this year but look forward to seeing what he can contribute as Davis Cup Captain. Daria “Dasha” Gavrilova was a new Aussie favourite; Federer could do no wrong; we not-so-secretly hoped that Kim Sears would hold off on giving birth so that Andy Murray could see through the tournament; and, love him or hate him, Nick Kyrgios is Canberra born and bred so we wanted to see him doing well.
Canberra is fortunate to have more than 150 public tennis courts at more than 25 complexes around the Territory, and more than 20 tennis coaches, according to the Tennis ACT website. From the picturesque courts at Reid, Forrest and Old Parliament House to the state of the art facilities at the Canberra Tennis Centre, Lyneham, there are options aplenty.
So where do you love to have a hit Canberra? Do you take lessons or have a social hit on weekends? Let us know in the comments below and I’ll try the top two before selecting the Best of Canberra.
