Veterans Park and AFP DA

The hundreds of people who claim a patch of grass and sunshine in Veterans Park every lunch time may have to find somewhere else – at least for a while.

When the potential redevelopment of the soon to be vacated AFP building between Northbourne Avenue and Mort Street was mooted in Canberra Times a few months ago, there was a lot of concern that the proposal also included demolishing Veterans Park.

Well the DA is now on public notice, and anyone with a problem with it has until 24 June to say so.

From what I can see of the application (some of the files are quite large), the park looks like it will be pretty much unchanged.

The building basics: part 9/part 11 storeys high; 4 basement levels with 472 car spaces, cycle provision, retail/cafe ground floor; offices/commercial over; subterranean rainwater tank.

The problem with the development wasn’t the changes to the park itself, but the shadow cast by the new building over the park – or so my vague memory says. Perhaps someone who followed this more closely will have more detail.
