The Canberra Times is reporting on calls by former NCA honcho, Arthur Kenyon, for Civic to go back to the control of the National Capital Authority.
He nominated an area from Haig Park in Turner to Lake Burley Griffin and including the Australian National University and Black Mountain Tower to be put back under the National Capital Authority’s domain.
“I believe the Assembly is struggling to balance its budget and will not be able to keep Civic in a manner befitting the national capital,” Mr Kenyon said.
“If the Assembly was relieved of the upkeep of the city centre it would be much easier for it to balance its budget and it would probably save the citizens of the ACT big rises in rates and taxes.”
While attractive on some levels you do have to think back to how boring Canberra was when it languished in the grip of the NCA’s predecessor the NCDC. On the other hand it’d be nice to see some money spent on the roads and gardens.
