High-quality speakers, great networking opportunities, a chic venue serving drinks and canapés plus a supportive environment to help women in real estate achieve success, feel empowered and inspired. That is the premise behind the ‘Catch up with the Property Girls’ event on Wednesday, 16 May 2018 at QT Canberra.

Catch up with the Property Girls is an inspiring event for all like-minded Canberra women in the property industry – from sales, property management, administration, marketing and development, to promote a forum for communicating challenges and problems they may face at work. The vision behind the group is to connect and inspire women in real estate to communicate in a collaborative environment and be part of a bigger community. The get-together provides a space for women to workshop solutions in a friendly environment aimed at helping achieve career goals.

The series of events is the brainchild of Leanne Pilkington, one of the real estate industry’s most respected and sought-after commentators with three decades of experience in property under her belt. Leanne is Managing Director of leading New South Wales boutique real estate group Laing+Simmons and she’s the only female Managing Director in real estate franchising in New South Wales and one of only a handful in Australia. Addressing the gender imbalance, empowering women agents and contributing to a fairer operating environment are all key passions for Leanne.

She continues to pioneer industry firsts such as establishing the women’s real estate networking group, ‘Catch up with the Property Girls’. She introduced counselling and employee assistance programs for Laing+Simmons team members, all while serving on industry bodies and championing the growth of professionalism in the industry at large.

Leanne revealed that she first started hosting the events because “Women that I knew kept telling me that a forum like this was needed. After a couple of years of them pushing me on, I sent an email to a dozen women that I knew had networks and asked if they agreed – two weeks later 65 women attended our first event in Sydney.”

“We [women] approach things differently than men, in general. We have less confidence to push ourselves forward, it is important that we support each other so we know we are not the only ones that feel that way! We like to be able to talk through our concerns without feeling judged, we are able to inspire and encourage each other.”

Leanne, shared: “We hope that the event will encourage women to take the next step in their careers – whatever that is for them. For them to realise that despite being in such a competitive business there is still support out there. It helps build confidence, set goals and just makes people feel good!”

“First-time attendees are always surprised at how supportive everyone is, and how much fun the events are. Even women that come on their own end up leaving with new friends!”

The Guest speaker for the Canberra event is Kylie Maxwell, Owner and Director of LJ Hooker Queanbeyan. Having started her Real Estate career in 1992, Kylie has a wealth of experience to share about her work journey in Canberra. From owning and operating boutique agency Maxwell and Co Real Estate in the mid-90s to triumphantly merging with the successful LJ Hooker brand, and then purchasing LJ Hooker Queanbeyan outright, Kylie has an immense depth of industry knowledge to share.
