An off-duty member of ACT Policing Operations yesterday (Friday, July 30) identified two suspects sought by police in connection with an armed robbery in Queensland, with the pair subsequently arrested and held pending extradition proceedings.
ACT Policing received information from Queensland Police on Wednesday, July 28, that a 26-year-old male and a 28-year-old female may have been travelling from Queensland to the ACT. Arrest warrants had been sworn against both alleged offenders in relation to an armed robbery in Ipswich, Queensland on July 25.
The off-duty ACTP member identified the pair as matching the descriptions issued by Queensland Police. The two wanted persons were shopping in Belconnen Mall at the time they were identified, and the vehicle suspected to have been used in the armed robbery was also located in the car park of the mall.
The alleged offenders were subsequently arrested without incident. They will remain in custody in the ACT pending an extradition hearing scheduled in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, August 2.
Acting Deputy Chief Police Officer Lesa Gale said that this was an outstanding example of how police sharing information across jurisdictions can result in first-rate outcomes.
“Our ACTP off-duty officer, too, is to be highly commended for his vigilance and actions in this matter. This Police Operations member made a quick assessment, had that assessment verified by support officers, and a prompt arrest was made,” a/DCPO Gale said.
