The ACT Government is seeking an exemption for an Environmental Impact Study for the construction of a new access road to the Yarralumla Brickworks development and proposed upgrade of Dudley Street.
DOMA Group last year won the right to develop the 16-hectare Canberra Brickworks Precinct, which will involve about 380 residential dwellings set around heritage buildings, with parklands and walking trails. A new access road is required to service the Precinct from Dudley Street and is a predevelopment requirement.
But the area is home to a critically endangered species; the golden sun moth, and a threatened ecological community; natural temperate grassland.
Other environmental impacts include the clearing of trees and other vegetation causing loss of amenity, loss of habitat, and increased erosion and water runoff, temporary diversion of a section of the Uriarra Track and permanent loss of an area of public open space.
The application says that while the exotic trees are of little ecological value, they provide a physical and visual barrier between the Yarra Glen/Adelaide Avenue corridor and Dudley Street.
The application says that with the Canberra Brickworks Precinct development and the future development of Molonglo Valley, there will be increasing pressure on Dudley Street which is already at capacity, and upgrades are required to allow it to operate safely and to meet the design requirements for a major collector road.
The project would increase the width of Dudley Street to 10 metres and would cater for 9000 vehicle movements per day, and involve the construction of a new roundabout intersection between Dudley Street and the new access road, near the Cotter Road lights.
A community consultation period for the proposal closes on Tuesday 9 October 2018.
