A 37-year-old man has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the ACT on a number of sexual offence charges.
The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Saturday, 5 October) charged with a failure to appear offence. Police will oppose bail.
In November 2017, the man fled Australia during a trial in the ACT Supreme Court where he was facing four charges in relation to alleged sexual offences.
The man was detained in the UK in July 2019 by local authorities in accordance with Australia’s extradition request.
On Friday, 4 October, members of ACT Policing’s Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team escorted the man back to the ACT from the United Kingdom to face a retrial.
Criminal Investigations Detective Acting Superintendent Matthew Reynolds said the extradition was a warning to others who thought of leaving the ACT without facing the consequences.
“ACT Policing worked closely with the Attorney General’s Department, the AFP’s international network and overseas law enforcement partners to ensure the man returned to Canberra to face court,” Acting Superintendent Reynolds said.
“ACT Policing works closely with our partner agencies to ensure those charged with offences are brought before the Court wherever they may flee.
“Our members have been working hard to ensure the victims can receive justice and move on with their life.”
