Al, I’m not sure that your comment about the flowering plums is right. We have had a few replaced in my street over the last year or two, and yes, they flower magnificently, but they also are already producing fruit, despite being only a couple of metres tall. I assume that all the plum tree stock comes from the same source.

I went for a drive past Brindabella Station January last year and up in the pine forests there were so many plump ripe blackberries I picked them and stewed them up for a campers breakfast the next morning. They were easy to get to and you would come home with multiple buckets full

Feathergirl – if you park at the Molongolo water ski area – near Dairy Flat Road and head up the river on foot, big bushes up there that will no doubt have big plump blackberries. Try towards the end of January/early February (maybe ealier with all this rain)

There’s plenty of cherries on the local tree that goes unnoticed.

Anyone have any tips on a good spot to get blackberries in Canberra?

I have fond memories of picking them at the Cotter when young, but lately they spray these ones.

My street in Narrabundah is planted with plum trees (the red leafed ones) and they are groaning with fruit. Local humans, possums and birds are enjoying them. An elderly Eastern European couple who live nearby collect them by the bucketload – I just wish I could taste whatever preserves they must be making with them.

Far from being just decadent ornamentals, these trees not only fruit every year (after a stunning blossom display), but also pop up in people’s gardens after the animals and birds have thoughtfully spread the seeds around.

We also have another kind of plum all around the area, with green leaves and yellowish fruit. They also pop up everywhere – I’ve got half a dozen around the garden.

They were the days picking mulberries, and making pies, you don’t see that many trees these days

Just finished the pie (with fresh cream). Mulberries baked in a pie are super sweet (they lose that tart flavor (no pun intended).
