As the music industry moves further into the world of isolation, one phrase has come to define the way artists are connecting with their audiences: X artist started a live video.
Twitch, Facebook, YouTube and even Minecraft are all providing spaces for artist-audience interactions to take place in lieu of physically attending shows, but it seems Instagram is leading the pack. It’s become home base for musicians, and independent musicians in particular.
The reason that the music world is gravitating towards Instagram instead of those other platforms is mostly due to its accessibility. Virtually every musical act has a dedicated account on which they share content, and a large proportion of their audience have their own accounts on which they already follow a host of artists.
Sure, typing in sometimes obscure handles and flitting between accounts during events like online music festival Isol-Aid can be a bit tedious, but it’s a small tradeoff for the use of a platform that ultimately drives traffic directly to the spaces that musicians were already inhabiting before COVID-19 and will still be occupying long after.
As you seek out your live music fix in the listings below, take a second to think about the message that pops up on your phone every time someone you follow goes live on Instagram. As ever, check back here throughout the week to find out about new events as they’re announced.
