I heard that a guy was hit by a car on Northbourne Ave in front of Qantas at lunchtime today.

Anyone see what happened or if the guy is ok?

Update: Apparently the man was hit by a Honda Civic and a lot of blood was coming from his head. Doesn’t sound too good.

Further Update: [ED – Apparently it was a 90 year old Dickson man who has sadly died as a result.]

Bound to happen sooner or later. Rather get hit by a car than cop a $51 fine ?

One of my little gripes is people who cross, particularly at the scene of that accident, when the little man is flashing red. Here’s the thing, the little man flashes red for a reason, and it’s to allow people turning left (from the GPO) to get into Northbourne Avenue. The little man flashing red means “don’t leave the curb”, and not “you’ve still got time”, as many people seem to think. When I give people a little toot of the horn, after they’ve left the curb while man is flashing red, they stare at me like i’ve done something wrong. I guess I need a bigger bullbar 🙂

. . . and today at lunchtime there were two members of the Canberra constabulary vigorously monitoring jaywalkers on this intersection and issuing $51 fines to offenders.

Sorry, edit, she said the person was crossing when the little man wasn’t green (because they were close behind her and she went when he was red) and there must have been a car coming.

My mum heard happen but said she couldn’t bear to look. Apparently all 3 lanes are closed.
