Having for years given away their student market to the private sector thanks to mismanagement, petty politics, being crap, and tearing down what could have been a world class selection of band posters, the ANU Bar is trying to get back in the game.
They’re now calling for suggestions for a new name so they can get some brand distance from the Uni Pub up on University Avenue.
ANU union chair Ben Duggan said the competition gave student’s the chance to name the popular venue.
“Combined with last year’s refurbishments, it’s hoped that a new name will improve the overall vibe of the location and make it a more attractive venue for students,” said Ben.
“A number of students have complained to me that ANU Bar is a dull name. So I thought the union board should allow students to decide what name it should take on,” he said.
Ben added that some names that have already been suggested, including the ‘Kirby Bar’ after retired Justice Michael Kirby, and ‘The Whitlam’ or ‘the Hawkes Nest’ after former prime ministers Gough Whitlam and Bob Hawke.
“Naming the bar after an Australian icon would give the place a bit of character and make it more memorable,” said Ben.
Apparently all Australian icons are either gay or Labor Prime Ministers.
If you’ve got a better suggestion you can email it to union.chair@anu.edu.au , but post it in the comments first.
