All ACT Government sports grounds will be closed for training and match play all weekend (31 October and 1 November) due to the recent rain and heavy rain forecast over the coming days.

The closures include turf sports grounds, excluding the Melrose and Nicholls synthetic fields and the Woden athletic track.

The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate, which manages the playing fields, says the decision has been taken in order to minimise damage to the turf surfaces and in the interests of public safety.

Heavy rainfall is forecast to fall throughout most of Saturday, with cold temperatures and low evaporation rates and as a result, grounds will be slow to dry out.

Thunderstorms are possible across the ACT and southern and eastern NSW today (30 October), while on Saturday, more than 60 mm of rain is forecast to fall as temperatures also drop below 15 degrees Celsius. Saturday will also see heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the morning and afternoon.

City Services says the condition of the grounds will continue to be assessed. Any decision to reopen the sportsgrounds will be made on Monday (2 November).
