Hundreds of cannabis plants growing in an elaborate set-up at a house in Dunlop have been seized after police discovered six rooms had been converted to grow hydroponically cultivated cannabis.
Officers from ACT Policing executed the search warrant at the West Belconnen home at about 10:00 am today (1 April) where they found hundreds of mature cannabis plants under a series of grow lights powered by unsafe electrical diversions.
ACT Policing’s officer-in-charge of major crime, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman, said the size of the seizure was significant and showed sophisticated drug-growing operations are still present in Canberra.
“Whenever a large-scale growing operation such as this is found, criminal operations running them for profit are never far away,” he said. “That’s why it is important for police to get these drugs off our streets.
“I remind the community that large-scale cannabis growing operations such as this are still illegal, and to report suspicious activity to police.
“Among the signs which may indicate the presence of a cannabis growing system are blocked-off windows with extremely well-lit indoors at all hours, ventilation fittings on the roof, or hoses and pipes being used for water and ventilation purposes.”
ACT Policing will continue to target and disrupt the illicit production, distribution and trafficking of drugs in the ACT.
