Two local water issues

Article Number One (ABC News)
Lake Tugerranong is closed (again), swimming in it may cause poisoning. Consider yourself warned.

Question 1: Can anyone remember a Summer in the last decade when this hasn’t happened?
Question 2: Is Lake Tuggeranong is a water quality control catchment before it hits the Murrumbidgee, and is this downstream (Red Rocks, Cotter, etc) water safe to let kids swim in, or not?

Queanbeyan Mayor alleges Telstra protocol changes are to blame for the earlier risk to public health in Lake Burley Griffin (the 1.5ML of effluent).
Telstra denies problem with network protocols, alleges there was a fault with non-Telstra equipment.

caf is absolutely correct. Safety critical systems need an automated dialler with a long list of numbers to work through until a HUMAN acknowledges the call. This is not rocket science. The shelves of your local automation shop are overflowing with these devices. Get real someone. Don’t blame Telstra (in this instance..)

Blue-green algae is a natural thing, low water flows can encourage it which may be why you’ve noticed it in the last decade with the drought. Also, when they say poisoning, they’re really just being cautious. It puts out toxins which when concentrated are not healthy.

*ugh*. There is no bloody way that SMS should be being used for safety-critical systems! It’s a best-effort-delivery, consumer-grade system. You might as well be using email! Idiots.
