At the 21 February public meeting of the Belconnen Community Council, we will discuss Belconnen residents’ preferences for the type of recreational use of Lake Ginninderra as well as the maintenance of the health of the lake. All members of the public are welcome.
Recently, excessive levels of blue-green algae have closed other Canberran lakes. The ‘beaches’ of Lake Ginninderra have worrying levels. The blue-green algae here are caused, in part, by run-off from estate development in Crace and Casey. Sediment retrenchment ponds, clearly, are not being adequately used.
The Council has outlined these concerns to the ACT Planning and Land Authority. ACTPLA has recognised the problems with the current lack of maintenance of the runoff settlement ponds and have identified the areas of responsibility and possible remediation measures. Future meetings are planned with other ACT Government Agencies, development representatives and associated NGOs.
Infrastructure works are currently underway on our lake foreshore. Investment in playground and picnic equipment is taking place. Have your say in the types of recreational activities you want on your lake.
Our speakers will include Ms Jane Carder from the ACT Government, City Services, TAMS, Ben McCullough, ACT Water Skiers Association and Damon Cusack from the Ginninderra Catchment Group.
