A car accident on each of the bridges over Lake Burley Griffin caused traffic chaos for commuters yesterday afternoon (31 October).
The Kings Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue bridges were backed up in both directions for about two hours, with queues of vehicles stretching onto the ramps and adjacent roads for hundreds of metres.
Emergency services were called to a two-car collision in the northbound lanes of the Kings Avenue Bridge at about 4:30 pm.
ACT Policing says a woman with non-life-threatening injuries had to be removed from one of the vehicles and taken to hospital. The bridge was closed and traffic diverted to Commonwealth Avenue.
However, at about 5:30 pm, there was another two-car collision, this time in the northbound lanes of the Commonwealth Avenue bridge, with another woman receiving non-life-threatening injuries.
Two of the three lanes were closed until about 6:40 pm while the scene was cleared.
Kings Avenue Bridge reopened about 20 minutes later at 7 pm.
