A car accident on each of the bridges over Lake Burley Griffin caused traffic chaos for commuters yesterday afternoon (31 October).

The Kings Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue bridges were backed up in both directions for about two hours, with queues of vehicles stretching onto the ramps and adjacent roads for hundreds of metres.

Emergency services were called to a two-car collision in the northbound lanes of the Kings Avenue Bridge at about 4:30 pm.

ACT Policing says a woman with non-life-threatening injuries had to be removed from one of the vehicles and taken to hospital. The bridge was closed and traffic diverted to Commonwealth Avenue.

However, at about 5:30 pm, there was another two-car collision, this time in the northbound lanes of the Commonwealth Avenue bridge, with another woman receiving non-life-threatening injuries.

Two of the three lanes were closed until about 6:40 pm while the scene was cleared.

Kings Avenue Bridge reopened about 20 minutes later at 7 pm.

Canberra used to be a plan city Because of the topography and lakes , we have very few roads that cross the city north to south and east to west. But in the last 20 years things have declined drastically, with very little thought, going into town planning for our rising population. Buses do not move freely between town & Group centres so we have few transport options. Roads are already congested, but there is little to nothing spent on major infrastructure other than the tram, which only services a small percentage of the population. Expect more congested roads and accidents. Canberra was not designed with a grid pattern of roads like most of the cities were, where there is alternatives to get away from congestion or traffic accidents.

If only we had many more unmarked police cars, who would see the idiot drivers that we all see every day.
