Buckingham Palace has named the ACT among a list of stops for King Charles III and Queen Camilla during a royal tour of Australia and the Pacific in October.

It will be King Charles’ first visit to Australia since he became king and the first by a reigning monarch since 2011, when Queen Elizabeth II travelled to Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

“Their Majesties, The King and Queen, will undertake an autumn tour in October 2024,” the palace said in a statement.

“This will include Royal Visits to Australia and Samoa, where their majesties will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.”

King Charles III, 75, ascended to the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on 8 September 2022, and was crowned in May last year.

A royal tour has been on the cards ever since but was thrown into doubt in February this year when the palace announced Charles was beginning treatment for an unspecified type of cancer. A tumour was discovered during a procedure for an enlarged prostate in January.

Royal officials said the visit to Australia, which highlights the ACT and NSW, would be limited due to the King’s continuing recovery.

“The King’s doctors have advised that a further extension to their majesties’ trip should be avoided at this time to prioritise His Majesty’s continued recovery,” they said.

“As with all His Majesty’s recent engagements, his program in both countries will be subject to doctors’ advice and any necessary modifications on health grounds.”

Charles has visited Australia 15 times previously, including with then-fiancée Lady Diana Spencer in February 1981.

The couple visited Diana’s mother and stepfather at their sheep station in Yass a week after the prince had proposed to her. Charles returned again to Australia shortly after, just prior to his July wedding in 1981.

Charles last visited Canberra in November 2015, with then Duchess of Cornwall Camilla, on a tour that also included Adelaide, Sydney, Albany and Perth.

The Prince and Duchess returned again in 2018 to open the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on behalf of the Queen.

Planning is still underway for the October royal visit and the palace said more information will be provided in “due course”.

In a statement, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was “honoured” to welcome the royal couple in October.

“They are always welcome visitors,” Mr Albanese said.

“The King has a deep regard for our great nation and has always spoken warmly of the time he has spent here and the astounding beauty of our extraordinary continent.”

Official Australian portraits of The King and Queen have now been released and can be downloaded from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet website.

In the portraits, The King wears The Sovereign’s Badge of the Order of Australia, while The Queen wears the Wattle Brooch, gifted to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Australia in 1954.

Australians can request printed versions of the portraits through their Federal Member of the House of Representatives or Senator in their state or territory.

Australian taxpayers are paying for another royal visit. These royal visits by our monarchs to their far-flung former colonies are an anachronism and inappropriate in the circumstances. These jaunts have outlived their relevance and are offensive to the majority of Australians.

Why is such a vibrant and multicultural country like Australia persisting with an outdated constitutional monarchy? All surveys I have read suggest majority support for us to become a Republic. Our country has moved from a white Australia policy to implementing one of the most successful and ambitious migration programs in the world. Our strategic and economic interests lie in the Pacific not the UK and any meaningful engagement comes from that region. We are situated on the doorstep of the world’s largest Islamic country and have to be relevant in those circumstances.

The easiest path to a republic would be if King Charles III endorsed our country becoming one, by declaring support for constitutional changes in his realms beyond the UK. Becoming a republic does not affect our country’s membership of the Commonwealth. Former colonies are doing just that. In 2021 Barbados transitioned from a constitutional monarchy under Queen Elizabeth II with the country’s PM remaining head of government and the Governor-General elected as the country’s first president. Jamaica is currently transitioning through the same processes, with plans to become a republic at the next elections in 2025. Both countries also had overwhelming public support.

I wonder if those disparaging the royal visit, on here, realise that Charles is the King of Australia? And because of that, until the Constitution is changed, he is also one of constituent parts of the Parliament.

So what do they expect the country’s leaders to do – tell him to naff off? *face palm*

PS Personally I believe that the monarchy, in a modern democracy like Australia, is an anachronism. Nevertheless, until there is major change to our Constitution it is our political system and King Charles is our monarch.

Our million $ a year GG will really earn her keep, so many ribbons to cut!!

2024 and another royal tour. I am not looking forward to watching our fawning monarchists and the country’s leaders bowing and scraping to these parasites. All paid for by Australian taxpayers! A family whose ancestry is built on colonialisation, massacre and theft.

How cringeworthy!

The country’s leaders are staunch Republic shrills, but they make circus acrobats look like amateurs from the backflips they perform when a royal hand is presented to kiss

They can afford to pay for their own travel and security, rather than expecting us to pay for it. What is the benefit to Australian taxpayers? Perhaps they could use some of their money gained from empire building to fund clean running water and infrastructure in our remote communities? Something they should have done long ago as part of their colonial responsibilities.

Whoopie do! Not. Do we really have to wait for all our dinosaur politicians to retire before we can move into the 21st century in charge of our own country? Surely we don’t have to have a war of independence to achieve this.

Yay, another crass royal intervention, on top of his tasteless gong for Ben Roberts-Smith.

Can Albanese top Gillard’s royal-grovel of 2012? After his full-stadium grovel to Boss Modi, it can’t be ruled out.
