Where to find a hotdog?

Yum Yum Tree, that’s it!! I kept thinking Lemon Tree however, that’s a UK railway platform shop!! In addition to great hotdogs, Yum Yum Tree do great meat rolls and other goodies.

If you want to make them yourself Wollies sells ‘American’ style hot dogs which I really like. Closest thing to they type of hot dogs I had as a kid.

The cafe (can’t remember the name) at Centrepoint in Civic serves hot dogs. This cafe has garnered some notoriety here at the RiotACT, so that narrows the field somewhat.

BTW, whatever hapened to the Danish hot dog?

The Wendy Franchises usually sell Hot Dogs and then your young fella can have a ice cream afterwards.

There you go, an actually helpful post. Don’t despair, we are not all a&^%holes on here.

Costco makes a lovely hot dog and it has a self serve area with lots of different sauces, an onion machine and self serve soft drink. It’s not the most exciting place, but the hot dogs are good. I don’t think you need to be a member to enjoy that service but you best call them to ask first if you consider this option.

I did not know that you could get hot dogs at Tidbinbilla. I luuuurve hot dogs and will be there at the first available opportunity.

My suggestions were going to be, The Wig & Pen, huge fantastic euro dog but not such a great spot for the wee one. You could also invest in a thermos that is big enough to hold food (from somewhere like Howard’s Storage World) and dine alfresco. Last suggestion is Wendy’s at Woden Westfield….again, not such a great spot.

Whilst on the topic of hot dogs, can someone please explain the addition of cheese? I have never ever had the desire to have cheese on a hot dog. My toppings ideally are tomato sauce, onion relish and mayo. If I’m feeling gourmet I’d go with mayo and Harissa.

What is the perfect hotdog?
In fact, OP, what is your little one looking for?

I think it is:
a) the soft moist bun
b) the savoury taste of American mustard
c) the sausage that has a juicy snap when you bite down on it

Maybe mum needs to try harder to give the little one the perfect hotdog.

The bun and the mustard are easy to come by (from your local supermarket) and the sausage needn’t be expensive.
However, you do need to pay attention to how the sausage is cooked (e.g. simmering water, right amount of time).

A perfect hotdog is 50% taste, 50% texture.

Um, the gentle jokes didn’t ruin the thread…A lot of people enjoy both the meaty information and the saucy jokes. The thread of sausages that is RiotACT needs the condiment of humour and the roll of sarcasm before being consumed by the salivating mouth of the eyes. Otherwise it would be very bland.

Not so much the sauerkraut of exasperation or the mustard of condemnation though.

I wouldn’t mind stopping off outside the Private Bin, but i’m having trouble getting up to 88mph down Northbourne.

I love <3 bum holes and hart hotdogs almost as much. Making him your own is best bet. Zeirholes is decent but doubtful to satisfy a kids needs. Stay away from goodberrys.

+1 for Tidbinbilla. I regularly go out there for a good hotdog with bacon and cheese on a nice soft white hotdog bun.

Also, +1 for the obnoxious high and mighty wankers. Just cause they’re mummy never payed attention to them……
I know what a hotdog is made from, and I still eat it cause it tastes good. It tastes even better on that preservative filled pure white bun too, with sauce AND mustard. Perhaps if some weren’t trying to choke down Lentil Dogs on Gluten free bread sticks they would be less angry and obnoxious and simply answer the question and keep their mouth shut.

If you’ve got a membership, costco has great ones.

Any servo/7-11 type store will probably have the nasty ones

I’d +1 Bluey’s except for the fact that it’s at the tradies – the area is kid friendly enough, and if its during the day shouldn’t be a problem.

Goodberrys in Belconnen would be ideal for him and you. You can sit down with a coffee, he can enjoy his hotdog. Easy parking, or access by bus – its one block from the Belconnen Westfield bus stop.

I believe that you can get into the cafe area of Costco without a membership, and they do hotdogs. Not great hotdogs, but they’re OK and they also have bottomless softdrinks in big mugs.

It’s the only solution I can think of in Canberra. Wherever you end up I hope you have a good time, and good onyer for looking after your little bloke. 🙂

They do a decent hotdog at the cafe at tidbinbilla tracking station.
And the space exhibits are awesome for all ages. Then the nature reserve is across the road if a rear ride with the windows down (or a walk) spotting wildlife appeals.

In Canberra, probably Franks and Beanz at the Majura Park complex (just in front of Woolworths) is your best bet. Its a food court, but as hot dogs go, they are not too bad and there is a range of options.

You could buy good quality sausages, sauerkraut, rolls, condiments etc and make your own at home, but if he wants to go out somewhere, that is probably your best option locally.

If you fancy a drive to Sydney, there is a place called Snag Stand on the 5th floor of the Centrepoint tower which also has a good selection.

Why not take a day trip to Sydney and go to Harry’s Cafe d’ Wheels in Woolloomooloo? Very nice hotdogs and a really cool location

Costco is a reliable default for me … not so useful if you’re not a member. Frank & Beanz out at Majura Park is also a better option than the donut shops (http://www.frankandbeanz.com.au/menu.html).
Can’t point you towards are more standard cafe-type-place coz I don’t use them. If you want to go OTT, Zierholz Fyshwick have a “barrosa valley kransky sausage on rustic bread w/ dried shallots, sauerkraut & mustard” for 15 beer tickets … maybe not ideal for the little man.
