News.com.au reports that Canberra-based actress Mia Wasikowska has been selected to play Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

Also confirmed is that Johnny Depp will be a cast member in this movie, possibly playing the Mat Hatter.

Does anyone know this girl or which school she attended?

I’m quite impressed that a local girl has scored such a great role.

Don’t forget to swat up on kiddie shows this week, although knowing Overheard the questions will probably be like, “What Norwegian children’s show in 1958 was the best-grossing television series of all time?” and the answer will be something like “Meerschweinchen og Rømmegrøt” …

*LOL*

I love Alice in Wonderland. It’s hilarious! Absolutely wasted on children.

Absolutely! One of my all-time faves. Incidentally, it’s right up there on my list of great children’s fiction with the Roald Dahl stories. I loved the Burton/Depp combination in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so I can’t wait to get along and see this. Fantastic that some local talent is getting some recognition too 🙂

It has been confirmed, Mia is going to be working with Anne Hathaway and Johnny Depp in this movie. How exciting.

At the risk of sounding huffy, this is not recent news.

To compensate for huffiness, I can inform that she has been on the radar of Aussie film lovers for a couple of years now. Go to a DVD store and rent either SUBURBAN MAYHEM (for which she won an AFI award) or SEPTEMBER (which got an ACT release at Dendy about a year ago), and you’ll see why she’s regarded as an up-and-coming talent both here and overseas.

Oh yeah, I thought I knew that face. I thought it might have been a Canberra familiar face (like about 99% of the faces in canberra…for everyone), but no, she was good in that movie.

She went to Canberra High School and would be about 20 now.

Of course! Since she was born in 1990..

The real question is:

Name me a Tim Burton movie that is any good?

Ed Wood… and Batman? That’s about it……

Anyways, we can all assume exactly what this film will be like, right?

It will surely feature Danny Elfman doing a typical Danny Elfman score.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz…………

This has definitely got my interest!

Mia I think is from Cook, went to Radford? She is about 17 or 18…Finished a movie with Hilary Swank not long ago..has a great screen presence I am told…only started acting at the age of 16, a natural…

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like this will be based off the game, the rights for that are apparently owned by Universal, and the burton one is owned by Disney.

Still, Burton tends to insert a macabre twist to things, hopefully they’ll get past the Disney execs.

Good luck, Mia!

Well done that girl!

: )

This isnt the same movie that was to be based on the video game “Alice” is it? I thought that was still in the limbo its been for the past, what, 6 years?

presumably mia does, and doubtless a residue network of friends and family, if she spent much time here…

not you, then big dave? what do you care about today then?

personally, i rekkun a burton looking glass will be a spectacular thing to look through.

Who cares?

OK, should have said “in recent times”.
If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a million times, don’t exaggerate…

On imdb.com it states that actresses Sigrid Thornton and Erin McNaught (if you call her an actress, former Miss Australia) were born in Canberra… I didn’t know that…

Name me a Tim Burton movie that Jonny Depp *hasn’t* starred in…

Challenge accepted.

Beetlejuice
Big Fish
Planet of the apes
Batman Returns
Pee-Wees Big Adventure
and
Mars Attacks

The Nightmare Before Christmas? Planet of the Apes? Mars Attacks!? But perhaps you were being rhetorical.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of Burton and Depp. Can’t wait to see the new Alice, perhaps it’ll be like American McGee’s semi-horror themed game.

Oops… It’s Mad Hatter, not Mat Hatter…

What is it with those two?

(Although I have to admit that Depp’s Willy Wonka was a delicious portrayal of someone walking the fragile edge)
