Big Solar BBQ in Hackett

Vegetarianism (or worse, veganism) specifically for the sake of the climate impacts of you nutritional source is ignoring the most important things if we have any chance of actually changing the current course.

There is no single ready to go solution to all these problems – solar can’t replace all other energy sources any more then coal could – saying meat bad, vegies good is equally off the planet.

A mix of energy sources/food sources/other resources are needed to support the human population of the world – the trick is to use the least damaging where possible and to price those things in a way which reflects the cost to the system rather then the subset of the cost which affects the seller.

Tofu is only good when in a laksa with seafood, chicken and pork.

If it was just me and a bunch of cows and sheep, climate change wouldn’t be an issue.

It is population that is the driver of everything.

Vegetarianism, Veganism, Carbon Tax or Direct Action, all are a waste of time if we don’t exert some control on population growth.

Substitute ‘normal people’ for ‘climate change apologists’ and ‘deniers’ for ‘skeptics’ and you have the basis for a cogent argument.

Ah no.
There are many farming methods which can produce meat without the massive carbon emissions of the high output,mass produced and grainfed meat industry. Definitely not at the level or cost that we currently consume though but that’s OK, because products should be priced at their true cost, including environmental costs.

Even then I believe (although ill have to check the numbers), agriculture is 15% of our total emissions and stock animals are about 10%. The majority of our emissions come from energy production and transport.

There is no disconnect between eating meat and believing in adressing man made climate change.

I don’t really give a rats about all that. But specifying [vegetarian preferred] when asking people to bring food to a barby in Australia is inherently funny and guaranteed to inspire ridicule among most readers. It’s even funnier because those earnest and serious people who did the specifying probably don’t even realise why it’s funny, and we all understand that as well.

I don’t think so, otherwise they wouldn’t hold a big barbecue to promote it. You may wish to re-read the article: it says they are ‘celebrating’ 19 000 Canberran homes using solar. That really doesn’t fit with reducing support.

I think Chewy meant that the vegetarian food may not be a big drawcard… What’s a barbecue without burnt meat and sunburn?
