Woden Community Centre is a whole lot more colourful thanks to the addition of a mural near their Woden office.
The street art mural was brought to life through a grant given to the community group by Westfield Woden.
A group of local young people attended two sketching workshops, assisting local street artist ‘PAW’ with the design of the mural and creating a fun atmosphere as soon as you enter the area.
Woden Community Service executive manager for mental health and community access Leanne Heald says the group is thrilled with how the artwork turned out.
“The mural has been an excellent addition to the community hub, not only providing a welcoming environment for community members but increasing the visibility of the site within the Westfield complex,” Leanne says.
Woden Community Service community development and engagement team leader Kara Mackay says the contributions of the young people taking part in the project made all the difference.
“The mural not only provides directional signage for community members, leading them up to the Woden’s community hub and The Little Pantry, but is also welcoming and represents the importance of community engagement and accessibility,” Kara says.
“Westfield Woden funded the workshops and mural and places value on community support and connections that community services provide.”
Westfield Woden centre manager Craig Smellie says the money from the grant for the workshops and the mural is a token of appreciation for Woden Community Service.
“The work the Woden Community Service does across the ACT is invaluable, and we’re proud to work with them to offer this central space at Westfield Woden,” Craig says.
“The community is at the heart of what both Westfield Woden and Woden Community Service do.
“Our customers tell us that a welcoming and caring space where anyone can come and connect is hugely beneficial, and we’re happy to be able to make the space brighter with the new artwork.”
Once getting to work, the artist was able to complete the floor-to-ceiling-sized masterpiece in a matter of days.
Thanks to the contributions of the young people who assisted him, he was able to use bold colours and a modern design, transforming the formerly white wall into something eye-catching and vibrant.
The mural also serves the purpose of pointing people in the right direction, directly towards the office.
Woden Community Service has been providing support to the Woden and greater Canberra community for decades, offering various services, including mental health and wellbeing, aged support, housing support, children services, disability and therapy services and many more.
