Students at Majura Primary school are swapping their pencils for spatulas and their school uniforms for aprons as they prepare to take over Joey’s Kitchen at Watson Shops on Tuesday 25 September.

This is the second year of the schools’ community partnership with Joey’s Kitchen. Deputy Principal Sarah Reece says the partnership has been a win-win for both the school and Joey’s Kitchen.

“The partnership incorporates and builds on students’ knowledge of food preparation and service, introduces them to entrepreneurial skills, financial literacy and numeracy and the service industry as a whole.” Ms Reece says.

“Students go through a process of having to ‘apply’ for a job (at Joeys), write an application, be interviewed, select a menu, assist Joey in service prep, cook and prepare a three course meal and then serve their invited guests.”

Joey Caruana, owner of Joey’s Kitchen, has thoroughly enjoyed the partnership with Majura Primary School.

“It has been a beneficial experience for me and my staff as we have shown them how to work at a restaurant and it is such a joy seeing the smile on the kid’s faces while they are working.” Mr Caruana says.

Joey and staff and students are available for interview.
