The O’Connor IGA this afternoon was chockers with slightly lost looking folks wearing futsal t-shirts.

The Liberals Steve Dozpot explains that it’s the 33rd National Futsal Championships (disappointingly held at the AIS Arena, and not the Futsal Slab).

ACT Shadow Sport and Disability Minister Steve Doszpot today attended the official opening of the 33rd National Futsal championships at the AIS Arena. Mr Doszpot said this is the 24th time the ACT has hosted the event, which attracts dedicated crowds of over three thousand supporters as well as interstate and international competitors.

This year there will be 122 teams competing, including 35 teams from New South Wales, 14 each from Victoria and Queensland, three teams from New Zealand and an under 13 boys team from the Solomon Islands, Mr Doszpot said.

Over 400 games will be played around Canberra over the next five days, with one of the highlights being tonights return of the Athletes with a Disability (AWD) competition, which I look forward to attending at the Mpowerdome. The ACT AWD squad is made up of ten athletes who have emerged from the Football Connect and Futsal Fives programs over the past 12 months.
