I’ll jump in on the debate – something I was not bothered with previously.

As a user of steriotypes on a regular basis, it is a VERY wide brush that is being used. Since the only experience you have ever had with NZ is limited to watching Once Were Warriors either once or twice, and observing a couple of floggings of the Wallabies by the boys in black, the use of the steriotype ‘she’s from NZ (because her mother currently resides there)’ is rather flawed.

While I’m accustomed to using a big brush, its not THAT big.

For the record, as a bona-fide citizen of New Zealand (among others), I am appalled at the condition that the house was in for what its worth. I do not consider the condition of the house to be in any way related to any country.

On the topic of the mother for that matter, I have nothing but scorn. Hence why I have not posted previously. Motherhood begets certain responsibilities, all of which have been neglected. I would entertain the notion that if there were a limitation that Centrelink payments would be cut off if certain persons got pregnant while on PPS, this entire situation would not have ever come about.

VG, From my recollection each tenancy officer has a portfolio of around 250-300 properties to manage although those numbers may have changed more recently. How do you think they are going to manage driveby’s as well as all the other stuff that goes on.

Missjill, when i was there they started to take video as evidence of the condition of some properties. Believe me when i say that the condition that some tenants let their living standards fall to is nothing short of disgusting

maybe, Jazz, the ACT government could employ long term unemployed people to supplement the numbers of act housing tenancy officers or work for the dole or concerned citizens, just like neighborhood watch used to do, but with more of a keep the property decent focus. Not that most neighbors don’t complain about the bad house in the street to each other over the fence, at the takeaway etc.

Apparently you can get evicted for doing that, just ask the Farrells.

Thanks Jazz, looks like Housing ACT need to be a little more diligent with their inspections. Maybe spot inspections is the way to go, but then the snivel libertarians would be up in arms, invasion of privacy, that kind of thing. Can someone make such a mountain of mess in 6 months? I guess it’s possible.

With the NZ thing. The woman and her mum could be any nationality, but the mother just happens to live in NZ these days? I don’t know.

peterh: There are plenty of people from different nations that are bad tenants and live in this kind of squalor, even Aussies. You’ve created a interesting profile of this family which could be true, but don’t restrict it to kiwis.

whatsup: Apologies, you would think after living next to an act govt house I would know better, the tenants over the years have been many and varied from all nationalities.

The only ones who took any kind of care of the place were the former tenants (an aboriginal family) and the current one, who seems to be doing the place up, even though she doesn’t own it.

Internal inspections twice a year maybe, nothing stopping them driving past for a visual inspection of the exterior. From what I’ve seen it may have tripped maybe a couple of alarm bells. You would think she would in no way be a candidate for bail bearing in mind her behaviour outside of the kids issues as well, but then again should we be shocked when we read who bailed her?

“Chief Justice Terence Higgins granted the woman bail with strict conditions including not to contact her children or go near their school.”

Nothing like Terry to over-rule the Mags Court baselessly once again….but it looks like it was after lunch on a Friday so I guess anything goes at that time

Fallen through the cracks? Inside one of the cracks is more likely!

Jazz 4:54 pm 04 Jul 08

Missjill the two inspections a year is the maximum number of inspections that HOusing ACT may conduct under the residential tenancies act. depending on staffing this one may have fallen through the cracks.

Security of tenure also means that its not easy to kick someone out. if the property is found in poor condition they’ve got to send remedy letters before any action can be taken.

peterh… oh of course. If she is a kiwi than she has to be trouble.

Thats a wide brush you are painting with there !

I have relatives who are kiwis – they were appalled with the state of the house, but had seen the same sort of squalor in NZ in rentals that they had owned (not maoris but white folk were the tenants) as they said to me earlier today, perhaps she had run out of options in NZ, came to australia for a new start and just couldn’t break free of the original rut she was in. just because she changed country doesn’t mean that she would have changed her personal discipline, hygiene, circle of “friends”.

and now we find out that she is a kiwi? maybe that is why there weren’t any complaints at the inspections, even though I have heard of houses having bolt holes cut into the floorboards in case of surprise visits from the boys and girls in blue. The inspectors walked right past the strategically placed big fluffy toy….

This afternoon, this woman was been granted bail in the ACT Supreme Court.

She was ordered to stay away from her children and not go within 100 metres of their school. She was also told not to consume illicit drugs, and that she could be subjected to urine analysis. Her mother is flying in from New Zealand (apparently to make sure she abides by the rules).

Ant a spunkrat? Funniest thing I’ve heard all day. 😉

Whatsup 12:39 pm 04 Jul 08

…it is quite possible that she is simply a nasty, useless piece of work who simply doesn’t give a rats about anyone but herself. Of course, i’m not saying this is the case.

She’s just another of the breed where nothing is ever their fault and the rest of Society has to do everthing for her..and when they dont she’s a victim. Her kids need help but not her…

I don’t know the details of the situation but from what the media has reported this woman is needing help on many levels. Its easy to condem this woman when you don’t have all the background information. Call me an optomist but I will reckon she can get herself sorted out if given the right assistance.

I agree.
Also wondering how she manages with the housing inspections, because the place was a bloody sess-pit, crap everywhere…I just couldn’t live like that, or have my kids grow up like that.

Poor kids, I just hope they are not to messed up by everything they have been through.
