Atheist church

By johnboy 14 September 2008 19

The all-seeing eye has discovered a meetup for Canberra Atheists.

We meet every fortnight at a random restaurant in Canberra to socialize and discuss all things atheist. So if you feel like hanging out with some like minded people and exploring ideas from an atheist perspective feel free to come along.

Praise Science!

I don’t think that churches have a monopoly on socialisation, discussion, hanging out or explouring ideas.

“Boring! They should be inviting along people who don’t agree with them.”

well not really – because it is actually very irritating having to speak slowly and constantly repeat yourself because religiofreaks can’t grasp simple logic and apply all kinds of whacky logics to things. And anyway when atheist groups meet up the conversation tends not too stick around the religion because there are far more interesting things out there than religion to discuss.

But how do they know its a random restaurant and not one specially selected by some higher power?

I get the joke, but it’s probably worth pointing this out …

If atheists suspected that, it would indicate that they believe that there is a higher power. Atheists actively reject the idea that there is a $DEITY (as opposed to Agnostics, who don’t subscribe to any particular views, and like to apply logic to all claims).

…so did you think we wouldn’t get the joke then?

Apologies jakez … I wasn’t trying to explain the joke, per se. The comment got me thinking about the differences, and I thought it might be worth pointing out. No offense intended.

Why? They would be insane.

If I start an Agnostic ‘Church’ do you think anyone would join to discuss all things Agnostic?

Being agnostic I’d have to say that I’m unsure 😉

They should do well in Canberra, what with us having higher education levels.

I don’t think they’d be game to…

…exploring ideas from an atheist perspective…

How does this differ from the perspective of the majority of Australians?

deezagood you took the only joke I have in my bag of goodies.

“So if you feel like hanging out with some like minded people and exploring ideas from an atheist perspective feel free to come along”

Boring! They should be inviting along people who don’t agree with them. Instead of congratulating themselves on how liberated and rational they are, these dudes really need to test their arguments against some believers.

Plus, no one on the event page had a beard. I though all card carrying atheists and skeptics had beards. I don’t trust this mob.

as opposed to Agnostics, who…like to apply logic to all claims

Badly, if they’re still agnostics.

Boom boom. Reminds of the dylexic, agnostic insomniac … he used to lie awake each night wondering if there really was a dog.

A woman went to the post office to buy religious stamps for her Christmas cards.
“What denomination?” asked the postal clerk.
“Oh, good heavens! Has it come to this?” said the woman. “Well, give me 50 Baptist and 50 Catholic ones.”

Just in time for the LHC fallout too.

Might trip along to a meeting, just to find out where the bunker is for when the black hole comes to swallow us up … (Coz of course, a bunker is going to help!) 😉
