Interesting. The only other actual “suburb” i can think of (i.e. excluding shopping centres etc) that the scottish takeaway has moved into on a standalone basis is Charnwood, so this is truly an interesting – if not definitive – indicator.

Perhaps the “big mac index” (previously a term used in economics to indicate purchasing power parity based on the price of a big mac) could take on a new and more profound meaning as the index of boganity of a given suburb.

I would have called that a snob, the bogan by his nature couldn’t care less what people think, that is why he revs speed boat at 2 am or doesn’t fix the muffler on his white commodore.

Bogan is a particular behaviour, not a thing like a house or car..

It is not the ‘what’ of bogan consumption that defines the bogan, but the why. For example, you could have two people, each of whom buys a lexus. One happens to buy the car because he likes that particular type of car and it suits his needs. The other buys it because he imagines it is some kind of status symbol that will impress his friends – and probably financed it using debt instead of money.

This is the subtle but crucial key to understanding today’s bogan. Unfortunately the subtley is always, by its nature, going to be lost on some.

I think the term has expanded nowadays, the cashed-up bogan, so the rotten attitude remains – a complete disregard for the effect they have on other people – but they often now have plenty of money to splash around on things bogans like, which are invariably noisy. Money has enabled them to affect a much larger number of people.

And since most of them breed furiously, you could argue that the welfare thing still applies… middle-class welfare (baby bonus/mat leave, family tax A or B, childcare rebate, return to school allowance etc etc).

* Pronouncing ‘th’ as ‘f’

* Pre-mixed bourbon or rum based drinks
* Flannelette
* Burnouts
* “70’s cars are the f***ing best’ (but I drive something from the 90’s)
* Physical fights over nothing
* Rats tails / mullets
* Tattoos – large and in obvious places

Anyone got anything to add to the list?

Need to venture outside the 2600-2602 postcodes I think JB. The older parts of Nicholls had plenty of trees when I lived there and that was almost 8 years ago, haha. So I dare say the newer parts are now sufficiently treed.

The part that would have the $1m houses would have many blocks at least the same as my current 780m2 inner north location. My old Nicholls block (if I was being particularly aspirational I’d be calling it Harcourt Hill) was on the smaller side and was 680m2. Hardly a postage stamp.

And to, shadow boxer the “Lexcen” is especially bogan seeing as it a rebadged Commondore!

There are tons of trees in Nicholls (and markets and golf courses and swimming pools and non franchise shops and english pubs and cafes like injoy, there’s even a frigging Dinasaur museum)

I do understand what you are saying but I think people these days are throwing around the term bogan to describe something that isn’t to their taste.

I dont particulalrly like the black bath tubs and gold taps in Omalley but it doesn’t make them bogan, in that culture they are considered good taste.

To me bogan is more a particulalr attitude and behaviour (generally someone on welfare with no respect or consideration for others or particulalrly bad manners).

The original “The Punch” article excludes Queanbeyan on a technicality because it it the wrong side of the border. I think it’s a long time since Queanbeyan genuinely qualified as “struggle town” although a lot of Canberra residents are too ignorant to have cottoned onto this. There is a fortnightly green waste collection and Council actually mows nature strips and maintains public spaces with a sense of civic pride: compare Queanbeyan Park with just about any park in Canberra, only Commonwealth Park comes close.

To keep social undesirables out, the bus fares to and from Canberra (even the concession fares) on Deane’s buslines are much more expensive than ACTION fares, acting as a sort of tariff barrier on Canberra riffraff. Property prices help to sort the rest out. The wrong side of the tracks (literally) in Queanbeyan is Oaks Estate, a place where Canberra tries to keep its human detritus out of sight, out of mind and away from the town centres.

Mind you, I have heard Jerrabomberra (or “Jerra” as true Queanbeyanites call it) described as heaven for the cashed up bogan….

Kambah can’t really be a bogan suburb. Since this story was posted there is now a gym there – Anytime Fitness. But I suppose technically it is in Greenway so it probably doesn’t count.

Al, a mate of mine, claims there’s no difference between the bogans of upper and lower Kambah, but alas…I have noticed creeping changes in him over the years since he moved under the shadow of Mt Taylor. Beware the nouveau bogan !
Why else would he sport a hairstyle he insists is a mullet, but pronounced after the French fashion (mullé), he smokes Winnie Blues for health reasons, and while he still wears the checked flannels, the t-shirt underneath is an effeminate midnight blue – AND he tucks the shirt into his strides when he goes to the Burnsie ! I have not seen him wear moccasins for years, preferring neat DBs. Disgracefully, he drinks middies, and takes home Bundy and coke ! Hey! so you have seen me park the RX350, Even if we get the car park sorted out at the Nicholls shops and have wider spaces I will still park the RX350 and take up 3 spaces, its the yuppie thing to do in the elite suburb and it makes sure that no bogan from Kambah puts a dint in my door.

If bogans from kambah made the trek all the way to Nicholls people would think the griswolds were comming! But I do say i think my family de-valued Harcourt Hill at one stage in 1995 with my brothers bodgy Cortina parked on our front lawn in all its glory!!!

Elizabeth was where i was born. nuttin wrong wif lizabet. Noarlunga is struggle town, like Woolongong, and charny was the bogan capital of canberra, then we all moved southside. mates of mine around the corner from me are amazed that i am moving. Kambah feels like charny, apparently. The new occupants of charny are not a patch on the old crews… and back then, melba flats gave us a run for the most boganized location…

i grew up in Kambah, lived there for 19 years (that’s 80% of my life thus far). It’s incredibly bogan, but goddammit it felt good being part of the 2902.

The 4 and 5 just don’t compare.

…that said, the distribution (throughout the suburbs) of Govt. housing does wonders to water down the boganisation of suburban Canberra…

In all seriousness, many of the the houses in Upper Kambah (see my previous post) are being renovated and the atmosphere in the area is much nicer and house prices have rocketted. I stil don’t like walking down past the ovals or across Drakeford though. Just between the two of us, I think the people down there are all on drugs and never wash.

They probably think a romantic dinner involves eating $4.50’s worth of chips over a lit bic while swigging down a few litres of passion pop.

Crime Capital of Australia on and off apparently. As a defence brat I have lived all over, and while not the scariest place I’ve lived, it’s definitely the most bogan. Kambah Woolies is great though. If only they had a place that made good coffee outside there I would love to sit and people watch.

I grew up in Melbourne’s outer east – Lilydale, Ringwood, Croydon, Mooroolbark, Kilsyth, Bayswater, Wantirna – sh!t that’s a veritable pantheon of bogan suburbs. Back in the 70s and 80s that part of the world was part rural, part outer suburbia and everybody was a fcuking bogan.

To be honest I think that Canberra’s bogans are try-hards compared to the folk that I grew up with.

I think most of Canberra’s suburbs are inhabited by the bogan kind. Bogans are the best entertainers we have and i find its always nice to be reminded of it. Hilarious and disturbing is a good mix.

Damn, I think I’m living in the lower Kambah area… Anyhow I am in bogan territory that’s for sure. One neighbour has a colection of whitegoods and large dogs in his backyard and the other has a carport made of blue tarp and a couple of those teenagers who sit on their bikes in their driveway watching you as you leave the house.

Hey! so you have seen me park the RX350, Even if we get the car park sorted out at the Nicholls shops and have wider spaces I will still park the RX350 and take up 3 spaces, its the yuppie thing to do in the elite suburb and it makes sure that no bogan from Kambah puts a dint in my door.

I lived in Ngunnawal and now live in Nicholls, Ngunnawal was bad and Nicholls near the shops is starting to get all these scabby kids hanging around. I enjoyed Ngunnawal for the entertainment factor.

The reason for the hill is so the residents can look down their noses at the Bogans and drop hot oil on them from the lookout towers in case there ever is a Bogan revolt (they are pretty revolting as it is. In case they ever get tired of not working or the booze dries up or so and so forth.

Kambah wins by weight of numbers. 4 times the normal suburb size, 20 times the bogan population.

Kambah will have won out as it is about the size of 4 regular suburbs thus outing Charnwood. Causway is technically Kingston so will have been brought up by the upper end of that suburb. Symonston – not enough residential to classify. Ainslie too expensive.
