I was looking at the punch today and they have a list of Australia’s top bogan suburbs:
- Albion Park NSW, Dandenong Vic, Kambah ACT, Redcliffe Qld, Wyoming NSW, Salisbury SA, Chigwell Tas, Ipswich Qld, Rockingham WA, Moe Vic.
Who said Canberra has a bogan suburb?
- “Canberra’s sprawling suburbs are so huge that they are split into several regions of suburbs, Woden, Belconnen (Belco) and Tuggeranong (Tuggers) and therefore, like any suburban mass, become booner/bogan territory,” he writes.
“Tuggers and Belconnen Belco are by far the best contenders with large clusters of booner suburbs. Before I hear complaints I am aware that Queanbeyan would win in a count back but is disqualified on the technicality that it is in NSW not the ACT. So the final best bogan/booner suburb in Canberra is: Kambah (in Tuggers). Quite a charming suburb where I spent large parts of my youth getting pissed in parks, but given the number of v8 Falcolns on the nature strip, wandering terrier dogs and the enormous size of the local Burns Club and indoor cricket centre it is Canberra’s booner capital.”
All the world is bogan save thee and me, and even thou like arbitrary thievery.

It depends dude, you never actually say anything, you just throw snide remarks from the sidelines.
What is the profile ?
If it includes eating at McDonalds occasionally I guess I do.
My point all along is the new definition of bogan is stupid, liking Jimmy Barnes is not bogan, playing it at 3 in the morning is, having a white commodore is not bogan, using it to chuck burn outs in your white trackie pants is, liking mcdonalds is not bogan, feeding it to your kids until they become fat slobs is, going to public school isn’t bogan, oh o.k. maybe it is 😉
Personally I think gold creek is the last bastion of independant retailing in Canberra and should be cherished. It even has a little lolly shop that my kids love.
I’m sure someone will respond by posting that stupid list.
I vote the next bogan suburb they build in Gungahlin be named “Sattler”.

Are you saying you don’t fit the profile then?

Dickson is borderline shopping centre so unclear whether it gets the benefit of the exemption. But a quick survey of the locals indicates that its probably shouldn’t. Maybe an aldi there will change things.
Manuka I’m not qualified to comment on whether it falls within the general shopping centre exemption.
Well I guess I better move then, Manuka and Dickson are obviously infected, where to go. Richardson looks nice in the evening when the sun sets on the tyre fire.

That just means that the proximity of Nicholls to the highway has turned it into a stronghold of boganity. Doesn’t change the fact of the boganity though.
The one in Nicholls is aimed at the Barton highway, don’t let that get in the way of a cool story though.
Kmabah is ful o da sikest khans, STAP HATTTING ON US!!!!

Interesting. The only other actual “suburb” i can think of (i.e. excluding shopping centres etc) that the scottish takeaway has moved into on a standalone basis is Charnwood, so this is truly an interesting – if not definitive – indicator.
Perhaps the “big mac index” (previously a term used in economics to indicate purchasing power parity based on the price of a big mac) could take on a new and more profound meaning as the index of boganity of a given suburb.

Also has a Scottish takeaway now.
I would have called that a snob, the bogan by his nature couldn’t care less what people think, that is why he revs speed boat at 2 am or doesn’t fix the muffler on his white commodore.
Bogan is a particular behaviour, not a thing like a house or car..

On bogans in particular…
that;s a sad lonely place you are coming from dude, come and have a beer with us in the sun some time.
fair warning though, we may be wearing thongs.
It is not the ‘what’ of bogan consumption that defines the bogan, but the why. For example, you could have two people, each of whom buys a lexus. One happens to buy the car because he likes that particular type of car and it suits his needs. The other buys it because he imagines it is some kind of status symbol that will impress his friends – and probably financed it using debt instead of money.
This is the subtle but crucial key to understanding today’s bogan. Unfortunately the subtley is always, by its nature, going to be lost on some.

This is why I can only refer to myself as a secular bogan. I don’t meet the standards 🙂
