canberra number plates

Sorry, Canberra. Despite your social media suggestions last year, the new slogan for the Territory’s numberplates will not be “APS4 in the streets, EL1 in the sheets” or “Canberra: Wombat attack capital of Australia.”

After putting the call out for Canberrans to come up with a new numberplate slogan in September 2016, Chief Minister Andrew Barr has today announced the shortlisted slogans, selected from 1875 submissions.

The new ACT numberplate slogan ideas to be voted on are:

  • NGUNNAWAL COUNTRY
  • AUSTRALIA’S MEETING PLACE
  • CBR – AN ACTIVE CITY
  • CBR – CITY OF DIVERSITY
  • CBR – DRIVING THE NATION
  • CBR – GREEN AND CLEAN
  • CBR – BRILLIANT POSSIBILITIES
  • CBR – FOR ALL SEASONS
  • CANBERRA – THE BUSH CAPITAL
  • CBR – AUSTRALIA’S COOL CAPITAL

Canberrans can also choose to vote and retain one current ACT numberplate:

  • CANBERRA THE NATION’S CAPITAL
  • CANBERRA – HEART OF THE NATION
  • CANBERRA – AGE FRIENDLY CITY
  • FEEL THE POWER OF CANBERRA
  • PARLIAMENT HOUSE (image)

From today until 2 February 2017, you can vote at www.yoursay.act.gov.au for one new ACT numberplate and to retain one current ACT numberplate slogan. You will need to register on yoursay.gov.au to vote.

Canberra’s choice of two numberplate slogans will be announced around Canberra Day in March.

Well, we can’t keep Bush capital, because we are not that – I saw more big old trees & bush in Delhi than we have here.
Age friendly city is just untrue.
Feel the power of Canberra is likely to get your vehicle vandalised in some places in Australia, so I guess that rules that one out. Come to think of it, that (along with the amount of “Canberra bashing” that goes on) would rule out Heart of the Nation too.
What say you?

Channelling the Honda / CBR connection again, how about “you meet the nicest people on a tram”.

I thought the CBR model was a Honda one.

You are absolutely right, so sorry. My brain was still asleep even though the body was up.

Hey, no worries.

For the slogan, how about “Hop On A Honda”?

This was a famous slogan about the time trams were last popular in Australia so there is a strong link to Canberra today.

There. There. rommeldog56. You’ll be OK! Deep breaths.

I’m guessing the CBR plates will be very popular with Kawasaki motorcycle owners in particular, but I don’t care for any of them.
For all seasons? What? get real, what does that even mean? You get four seasons everywhere in the world.
Brilliant Possibilities? Hardly. Possibilities are quashed by red tape and exuberant government fees. Look at the container village for instance. Even though I thought it looked ugly as the Skywhale, that was a great little eatery, but they are all going to have to relocate. How many will continue to operate? Will they just be shut down forever? Parliament lawns are being shut down thanks to paranoia, the lakes are going green, limiting their usability and all the wonderful possibilities for water sports. This slogan is hardly appropriate.
As for Ngunnawal Country, would that not be offensive to the Ngarigo, Nyamudy/Namadgi and any other tribes claiming parts of the A.C.T as their lands?
The Bush Capital is becoming less appropriate as the LDA keeps allowing developers to decimate the eucalyptus trees in the name of progress.
Cool Capital only applies in winter. Tomorrow’s top of 36 degrees is hardly indicative of snowflakes and fur-lined jackets.
Any plate chosen from the list above is simply going to be cringe worthy, no doubt selected not by public vote but through some internal government review process. I also wonder how much public funding went to this entire campaign, money that could have been spent on something beneficial to all Canberrans?

“From today until 2 February 2017, you can vote at…”

So it’s not just dubious Development Applications which get slipped through at this time of year.

What about – “CBR – FEEL THE RENEWABLE POWER” – nice retro, bipartisan feel…., or “CBR – CAPITAL OF IRONIC SLOGANS” ??

How much will they cost?

The “Euro-type” long ones cost over $300 but hey, the trendoids still buy them.

“Brilliant possibilities” sounds like sarcasm!

I don’t see why it can’t be simply ‘Australian Capital Territory’ or something similar.

Having trendy slogans (which are usually time-expired very quickly) only gives a free kick to people outside the ACT who take any opportunity to belittle or make fun of Canberra.

Well said. Exactly. But I’m afraid that simply won’t do in this newly progressive, grown up, hipster Canberra.

I don’t see why it can’t be simply ‘Australian Capital Territory’ or something similar.

If you have to call yourself cool are you by definition uncool?

Why are they all CBR or Canberra? Shouldn’t they be ACT seeing as Canberra is just a city and not a State or Territory?
It’s NSW, not Sydney
It’s VIC, not Melbourne
and so on

Not “Canberra – Age Friendly City”. Thats just a lie unless you are a rich retiree, can afford the absurdly high cost of housing (including retirement housing) and of course, can afford the artificially high Annual Rates and Govt charges such as vehicle registration, parking, etc.

Still, i suppose if its a slogan on number plates, many numb nut ACT voters and politicians will believe it.

I don’t mind CBR – BRILLIANT POSSIBILITIES or CANBERRA – THE BUSH CAPITAL.

Just the “Bush Capital” or the “Nations Capital”. Keep it simple.

This is such a 1st world problem……..

Will “no slogan” numberplates be available?

I was the person who first suggested Canberra – The Bush Capital even though there was a female on Andrew Barr’s Facebook page today trying to claim the credit. I first suggested it here on the first day of the competition then sent it to the website a few seconds later.

I’m glad to see that none of those stupid “Boaty McBoatface” variations made the cut. That wasn’t funny to start with and seeing it regurgitated over and over here and on Facebook and Twitter was tedious to the max.

There is something Orwellian in voting for a Government approved slogan. Nevertheless I have voted, but would have preferred:

CRB Continuously Ballooning Rates
CBR Casually Blowing Revenue
CBR Controlled By Rogues
or that crowd favourite – Can The Tram

Oh please – not a CBR one !!!

We will just all look like a goose driving around with CBR on our plates. Groan……
