With infinitely more electric vehicles sold each quarter, residents within the nation’s capital are witnessing an EV revolution. From Manuka to Mawson adoption rates are soaring, as more and more households take the plunge into a post-petrol world.

Offering many practical benefits and a bucket load of karma, electric vehicles are the favoured new vehicle purchase choice. And, with attractive financial incentives and a charger network expansion plan underway, making the switch is even easier.

Yet while external charging solutions remain underdeveloped, charging one’s vehicle at home stands as the ideal solution. If you are considering taking the leap into the EV world you have come to the right place. Whether you are seeking a new charger or greater efficiency from your current, an EV charger installer can help.

What makes a great EV charger installer?

The best EV charger installers devise integrated solutions that makes powering your drive a breeze. If you’re looking for a licensed electrician to help with your installation, we suggest considering the following:

  • Qualified, licensed, insured. Installing a home EV charging station is a complex and technical process that requires specialist knowledge and expertise. Hence, as with any electrical work, ensure your installer’s qualifications, licensing, and insurance are all up to date. Importantly, ensure any works are completed alongside a certificate of compliance.
  • Reputable. Often the best EV charging station installers are also the most reputable. Backed by years in business and many satisfied customers, they are established names within the local industry. Here recommendations from family and friends are incredibly helpful, along with suggestions from car dealers themselves.
  • EV installation specialist. Although any qualified electrician can install an electric vehicle charger, not all are innately aware of current standards or innovations. From safety compliance through to solar connectivity there is plenty to consider. Unlike generalised electricians, EV charging specialists instal stations on a regular basis, easily placing them ahead of the pack.
  • Solutions centric. While universal charging products exist, there is no one size fits all universal charging solution. The best EV charging installers harness their expertise to devise solutions befitting client need. Factoring in physical variables, existing power capabilities and desired outcomes, they present options that service both current – but future need. Three things to look out for in any proposed solution are convenience, compatibility, and time savings.
  • Transparent pricing. Installing an EV charging station does require an initial investment outlay. And although it is minimal when compared to the savings provided over time, it pays to review pricing. All great installers happily provide transparent quotes, with full specifications and itemised costing included. Therefore, when reviewing contractor quotes, be sure to compare apples with apples, noting any exclusions and optional extras.

Installation costs can start from about $3,000 to upwards of $4,000 for a level 2 EV charger covering both the supply and install. How do I install an EV charger if I live in an apartment?

While many new apartment complexes now include EV charging stations, most existing complexes do not. If you live within an apartment and wish to have an EV charging station installed, the first step is to check with body corporate who can provide advice on the building’s electrical capacity along with applicable requirements or restrictions. From here an EV charging station feasibility study is usually required, along with the gathering of quotes, before submission for vote by the committee.

The best EV charging station is the one in your garage, carport or driveway.

The second best is a slow charger where you spend several hours parked most days when the sun is shining. Workplaces. Parking stations. P&R lots.

The third best is a rapid charger a few hundred km from home, with food options & clean restrooms.
