Best of Canberra – Lookouts

By Gabrielle Kneipp - 27 October 2015 13

Canberra view

I love a good lookout. Sometimes you have to work hard and climb to the top of a mountain for it and it’s all worth the while when you get there. Other times you can arrive in the car and pity the people who have chosen the hard way.

So this week I am looking for the best place to view Canberra? Obviously, there is Mt Ainslie – the #5 thing to do in Canberra according to Trip Advisor. Black Mountain, the Arboretum, Red Hill … But is there a secret spot you have that nobody else in Canberra knows about? (If so, you probably don’t actually want to tell us!) Or is there somewhere else so well known that we need a reminder?

Let me know in the comments below. I’ll visit the two most popular places and decide the verdict in next week’s article.

What’s Your opinion?

Karralika Fire Trail behind Macarthur, south-east of Mt Wanniassa.
Great views of the Mugga Lane landfill and when the wind is blowing from the east early in the morning the bonus of the invigorating odour of rotting nappies.
Similar “shock” effect to getting a whiff of smelling salts when we got knocked out playing rugby league as kids.

Also, it’s not Canberra, but the Weereewa Lookout on the Lake George SW escarpment is a unique spot for a moonrise.
A sunrise is also worth it, with those wind towers peeking out of the mist.

Isaacs Ridge is good – good view to the East.
Mount Taylor is another good one.
My preference is for the Bullen range, but I also agree with the poster above who recommends Mt Coree.

Mount Ainslie. It really is lovely up there. I feel like this subject is deliberately framed to ask people not to vote for it, but it is deserving of its accolades.

Quite the contrary!! If Mt Ainslie is the best, then it deserves the vote

Best for me has got to be Dairy Farmers Hill. Views down the Arboretum towards the lake and back into the city are awesome. Then the view of the Brindabellas directly behind. An awesome place for a quiet beer on the ride home after work.

Agreed. Best views by far.

..but what are you riding after that beer? 😉

+1 for Mt Pleasant, it’s a good and lesser known spot to view Canberra from. Although, some of the trees are getting a bit too tall now and intruding in on the view.

It’s pretty hard to go past Mt Ainslie though, but for the purposes of offering another option I’ll also nominate Red Hill, but not at the kiosk, walk up to the trig point about 1km away from the car park. It’s a nice walk that’s not too onerous and offers a pretty good view across the eastern side of the city and great views over Woden and the Brindabellas.

Back in the day it was always good when you could park pretty much right in front of Parliament House and walk up the hill to admire the view towards Civic from under the flag pole. Now you can’t do that without walking through the building and being security checked. Kinda kills the mood, haha.

Depending on how much of town you want to see at once – pretty much anything with Mount in the name. Mounts Pleasant, Painter, Taylor, Soldier, Spy .. Mount Majura – ride/walk up and do a couple of chin-ups on the trig point. Or as you’re travelling on the Centenary Trail just west / downhill from it there’s a clearing on a rise which is pleasant enough at sunset.

Or, again on the Centenary Trail in the Forde-Hall section is One Tree Hill from where you can gaze upon high to the majesty of / pit of despair called Gungahlin. (At least they have NBN Fibre.)

Gubur Dhaura Heritage Park (that’s what gmaps says it’s called) is a cute hill if you’re passing nearby.
