Break-in at St John’s Care

By clj - 3 December 2012 4

Last night somebody broke into St John’s Care and stole all the gift cards they were going to use for their Christmas Present Room. Through this service last year they provided over 600 disadvantaged Canberra kids with presents, and this year it was looking to be even more. Most of the presents distributed are donated in kind, but most in-kind donations are toys and things more suitable to little ones, and the older kids miss out. So, St John’s Care asks for donations of gift cards as well, so that older kids can choose something they like.

So much for that.

If you would like more info or even to help in some way, their number is 6248 7771 and their Hands Across Canberra site is http://handsacrosscanberra.org.au/give/browse/?id=169.

The response to this incident from the public and some Canberra businesses has been so amazing. I don’t work at St John’s Care, but I used to be a volunteer and I donated some of the cards that were stolen, less than a week ago. And I know some of the families who would be likely to get their kids presents from there, and I’m so glad they won’t miss out as a result of the theft because they’re good people, they work hard to keep going with so many things against them, and they deserve a bit of a break. So… yeah. Really special stuff, Canberra, good work.

The selfish and unthinking are always with us too, it seems.

This is simultaneously heartless and heart breaking. I hope the cards can be cancelled or tagged or something, although if the details weren’t recorded for each card that could prove very hard.

Stealing from the rich to feed the poor is one thing (not that I condone thievery) but stealing from poor children (by proxy) is absolutely unforgivable.
