Campbell Primary School: good or bad experiences?

ABC_watcher 2 February 2010 12

I just moved to Canberra and my daughter has started in year 1 at Campbell Primary. Just wondering what people think of the school. Does it have a good reputation? is it good academically?

What's Your Opinion?

Normally I’d never comment on someone’s poor use of punctuation and sentence structure on the net. But since you *are* asking about a school’s performance, maybe you can hope they’ll teach your daughter better than whichever school was responsible for your education?

Campbell Primary is OK.

I have a child there and really find the principal to be lacking in basic sense. However it is convenient and being primary school, most of what is learnt is from home anyway. So long as you ensure your child doesn’t fall behind, and is happy within themselves by the time they get to highschool, you should be fine. Despite the principal, most of the teachers seem to be very committed, which is the important thing. The office staff are very helpful and caring as well. I have thought about removing my child, however, cannot guarantee that any available primary school will be any better, hence basing my choice on the convenience factor.

I am sure its an OK school but as has already been pointed out – being involved in your kids education is what makes the difference. Talk to the teachers, talk to your kid, find out what they are doing, bread together etc etc. All the boring stuff that makes a huge difference!!

Campbell Primary has a good reputation overall. Your challenge will be to find out whether the school lives up to that reputation this year.

My advice is to help out in the classroom with reading etc as much as you can. It is the best way to be involved with the child’s education, and the best way to keep an eye on what is going on in the classroom. It’ll help you get to become more a part of the community, too.

Nothing like an outragous overstatement to devalue the contribution or parents hey troll-sniffer. Got any reputable sources for that figure?

Eighty percent of your child’s education will be as a result of the education you give her at home. Keep that in mind and almost any school can be suitable. It takes a lot more than dropping them off and leaving it to the teachers. You probably already know that.

I have heard very good things about Campbell and the Principal seems very good. Some benefits of Campbell primary; smaller school, reasonably small class sizes, nice area, a ‘walking bus’ from the Campbell area and a predominantly middle-class demographic. Disadvantages; high proportion kids from defence families, so the school population can be quite transient (which could actually be taken as a good or bad thing!). The NAPLAN results look fine to me. I know a few teachers there and they seem very happy and positive about the school – I think you have made a good choice.

what, you couldn’t ask other parents from your child’s class? Ask questions of the principal when you enrolled her? talk to your child’s teacher to see if they have half a brain?

haven’t you heard? there’s a new website that tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about every school in australia….
