Bloomberg have the bombshell news that the Fairfax CEO, David Kirk, has resigned.

He’s being replaced by Brian McCarthy.

Of interest to us in Canberra is that McCarthy came out of the old Rural Press which had as its flagship our very own Canberra Times.

So after mighty Fairfax gobbled up our local paper it seems the Canberra Times way is going to dominate.

UPDATED: The New Matilda has a good look at how the Rural Press takeover has worked and what it means.

Meanwhile word reaches us that the SMH editor Alan Oakley, forced out yesterday (as reported in the Australian), might be coming to take the reigns here at the Canberra Times.

ANOTHER UPDATE: The Australian has another piece suggesting the CT’s Peter Fray is off the run the SMH with Oakley moving to Canberra.

Just look at the fact they refused to publish the asbestos story until the RiotAct gave it a run. I’m not impressed with the Crimes at all.

Interesting, but i think like most of the Australian print media – with the possible exception of certain parts of the Australian – the Canberra times is in terminal decline in terms of quality and breadth. To late to save it.
