The first numbers are dribbling in on who might be the next president of the United States, and watching it live is a group at PJ’s in the City.

Democrats Abroad Australia, essentially a local offshoot of the US Democratic Party, has been running a watch party from 10 this morning at the pub in Civic’s Melbourne Building, and they’re settling in for the long haul.

Beers are being poured as TV screens and tablets beam the results live from stations like CNN and ABC.

Dan O’Malley hails from Franklin County in Ohio, his mother Jeane O’Malley from Tomkins County in New York State, and Scott Couch from King County, Washington.

Dan was born here in Australia in 1980 after his parents moved here in 1979 – so he has dual citizenship – while Scott moved here in 2019.

They’ve all filled in their absentee ballots and either posted or emailed them back to the US “weeks ago”, depending on their state’s requirements. And as members of Democrats Abroad Australia, there are no prizes for guessing their pick.

“Living through four years of Trump, I already know what’s coming if he gets elected, and I just can’t do it again,” Scott ventures first.

“I think [Harris] carries a bit of Obama essence to her, in that it’s going to be run in a very classy, dignified and respected way.”

“She’s sane, she’s articulate, she has control over herself. Certainly, her ideas and her morals will do something for the middle class,” Jeane says.

“Professional,” Dan adds.

All mentioned foreign policy and its impacts on Australia as reasons they voted blue.

Former national chair for Democrats Abroad Australia, Justin Underwood – still wearing his Biden/Harris shirt from 2020 – says it’s the main job of his group to get these people to vote in US elections.

“So we have our own registration website designed to facilitate the process of getting people to request and submit their ballots from the US,” he says.

“The other thing we do is give representation for Americans living overseas within the national Democratic Party, so we have our own delegates to the Democratic National Convention who vote on party policy.”

Despite COVID restrictions at the time, the watch party the group held for the last election, also at PJ’s in the City, was “massive”.

“The place was packed,” Justin says.

“And I put that down to the fact that here in Canberra, it’s a very political city, and so you’re going to have a lot more people who are engaged with politics, including US politics.”

He has no idea what to expect this time around.

“The polls have been all over the place and it could be anything from a Trump to a Harris blowout.”

But he’s hopeful a poll in his mostly red home state of Iowa is a sign of things to come, which has Harris leading.

“If we are in the lead over there, we’re probably going to be the lead in other unexpected places.”

Madeleine and Arabella, both studying humanities at the ANU, have finished their exams for the year and have come “to grieve, probably”.

“We were in high school the last time it happened, so this is the first election when we’re a lot more involved in politics,” Arabella says.

“We’re just more aware of the stakes and influence that the outcome of either candidate winning could have on the rest of the world.”

They might not have been able to vote, like the US or dual citizens in the room, but both girls are also batting for Harris.

“She’s not Donald Trump,” Madeleine says simply.

“I also like the fact she’s a woman … and she’s so outspoken about things that women especially care about, like reproductive rights,” Arabella adds.

Trump stood for common sense – to get the economy right, to secure the borders, and to boost investment and therefore future jobs in the US. He was happy to speak about policy and attend events. Harris was not. She hid for the first few months, a la Biden in 2020. The Democrats lurched too far to the left. Even Bernie Sanders has said they have deserted the working class. Their approach seemed to focus on gender, abortion, and Trump. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, some shonky pollsters and a number of major eastern seaboard newspapers misled the electorate about Harris’ prospects.

A comprehensive Trump win, fantastic! I love watching all the lefties chuck a tantrum. Hopefully now we have someone in office who will push back against all the woke ideology and garbage that is destroying our institutions and our way of life.

Can anyone explain why different networks had different Electoral College results? Don’t they draw from the same source, or is it Fox v CNN & MSNBC ideologies

Trump Trump Trump!

There will be a lot of collective moping about tomorrow….

The weirdest thing is canberrans cant understand why you would want to thrown out a bunch of apparently quite strange, ultra woke and inept leftists out of govt. Could it be they were just sick of the mess they created.

I saw a video of this one dude in dan francisco who was filmed observing a woman with a MAGA hat on….the vile language and aggression this triggered idiot spewed out at her was unbelievable.

@stevew77
Just as democracy delivered a result in the US, it also delivered a result here in Canberra.
Of course, to your jaundiced eye, only the American democracy got it right.

Well here’s a revelation for you – those same 4 years of Trump in the US, will have Labor/Greens in Canberra … enjoy!

Oh and “I saw a video of this one dude …”. Wow that’s a huge bucket of evidence – keep on googling, you might even find a second similar video or perhaps someone with a MAGA hat abusing a Latino American.

It appears the US has an out of control illegal immigration problem, rampant inflation and a leftist administration that appears to hate both the idea of america and americans/ the “deplorables”.

Why wouldn’t Americans want thier country back, and want to give Basement Joe and the Cackler , the heave ho?

Good riddance the whole left wing destructive clown show….

The democrats were doomed with OLD mate Biden… He struggled to walk let alone run. They chucked the baton to Harris at the eleventh hour. Too late. Game over!

The Trump machine was too strong to keep out. And the USA rejected what was a pretty weak administration.

Trump’s the big dog now. Buckle up!

Pampered elites not getting their way. It’s like watching Veruca Salt (the rich spoilt girl from Willie Wonka) “Daddy! I *demand* these revolting Trump voters are cancelled *now*” (Daddy just gives his hapless expression). You know, these preening cultural elites ought to see themselves in the mirror — then they might get a sense of why they lost the popular vote.

Woke destroyers of nation-states, here’s mud in your eye.

Of course, the orange clown won’t fix anything, the system is too broke and he’s too much a windbag, but better this than the evil which in all sincerity thinks it’s good.

I took annual leave to be able to watch at home. Listening to coverage from a local radio station in Indiana while the TV is muted on Fox News. Occasionally flipping through other networks. After the Indiana station finishes their local coverage I think I’ll fire up a stream of Infowars.

Happy Orange Man Day everybody!

Imagine my shock at the photos… 🤣
