Candle lit Earth Hour Dinner

By johnboy - 9 March 2011 4

Here at RiotACT we are sometimes sceptical of gesture politics. But we’re quite definite about good dinners.

So it’s worth taking a look at the Greenhouse Emporium’s candle lit earth hour dinner.

In 2011 we are all encouraged to go beyond the hour, so in joining the efforts to make a difference to our world the Greenhouse Emporium is hosting a candle lit dinner to demonstrate and celebrate the growing developments in environmental sustainability and the continued efforts to battle climate change.

Where: The Greenhouse Emporium, 277 Canberra Ave, corner of Geelong Street

Serving: A homely, rustic a la carte menu with a range of entrees, mains & desserts (BYO venue so please bring along a drink)

All the energy put into advertising Earth Hour has been a w*nk for several years now. It’s no more effective than a ‘like’ on Facebook. How does burning a dozen candles in lieu of switching on a lightbulb save energy? As symbolism it’s bunkum; as action it’s laughable. This is activism of the most dangerous kind – let people off the hook without effort and without action required. I cannot believe government departments – for all their rhetoric on effectiveness and outcomes – fell for this tripe.

Because switching off a few lights is totally better for the environment than not-hosting an a-la-carte dinner.
