The Canberra Multicultural Community Forum (CMCF) gives its full support to the relocation of the Islamic School of Canberra from Watson to a larger site at Weston Creek, Chair Sam Wong said today.
“I congratulate the Islamic Council of the ACT, the Council’s president, Mohammed Berjaoui, the Chair of the ACT Muslim Advisory Council, Ikebal Patel, and the ACT Government for bringing this project to a successful conclusion,” Mr Wong said.
“In the five years it has been operating the Islamic School of Canberra has demonstrated beyond doubt that it is a much-needed facility.
“It has run as a primary school and now wishes to add a high school – there was an urgent need for a larger site. School authorities are projecting a total enrolment of around 900.”
Mr Wong said the school was open to any parent who wished their child to have an Islamic-style education.
“Very importantly, it has the ability to teach Arabic – a language that will be in great demand as the 21st century advances,” he said.
“Of course there have been criticisms, but the Islamic School of Canberra has the runs on the board and has proved to be a very valuable addition to the educational scene in Canberra.”
