Are there any comic book art classes for teens in Canberra?

I have an interested teen. I have looked in the yellowpages and have googled until my fingers are numb.

Thanks in advance!

A Flyer has circulated at schools this week:
Canberra Region (at Queanbeyan High School) 24th-28th Jan 2011
website: http://www.illustrating-man.com.au/

Prices seem pretty reasonable…

There is often a flyer that goes home with the “Holiday Happenings”booklet for a Comic Camp. From memory it was run at Lyneham HS. A brief attempt to find details on Google didn’t meet with much success… I’ll try again later…

Also – one of the Youth Workers at one of the Youth Centres (either Lanyon or Woden) used to (and may still) teach cartooning at one or both of those Youth Centres… He ran a session for the combined Colleges Conference day last year… I have forgotten his name…

I’m going to suggest to you, if the teen wants to draw comics well into their future, you’re better off going with traditional life drawing classes.

I know, it sounds so boooring, and laaaame (and that’s exactly what I and my partner thought when we were in high school, and drawing manga non stop!), but you find a few years down the track the continual shortcuts taken in the simplification of comics skews your ability because you don’t have that solid foundation of anatomy and lighting. And then you realise you can’t actually draw comics properly apart from a head, or the occasional character standing statically in a cool outfit, and no matter how much you try, nothing looks right.

Just something from someone in that exact position just a few years ago. *shrug*

I suggest you speak to Mel & Cam at Impact Comics, situated in Garema Place in the city, they or some of the helpful girls should have few deatils for you
