This story is a little old, but interestingly no general news agencies have picked this up. Only after catching the story on the rumor mill, and then googling, I found the story on cycling news .
Fitz’s Challenge is one of the ACT’s most popular road cycling events, and has had a very good injury record over the last few years. The major feature of the race is the long steep climb up Fitz’s Hill, and then the subequent descent down Fitz’s hill. Last week during the race, it is alleged that the two cyclists crashed in seperate accidents towards the end of a long and fast descent (most likely the bottom of Fitz’s Hill). One of the cyclists later died in Canberra Hospital, and the other sustained serious injuries, but is in a stable condition.
As I tend to prefer the safer environment of riding bikes on dirt, I have yet to hear anything other than a third-hand account of the events… I don’t suppose we have any witnesses here?
