Mining and tourism companies all over the world know the cheapest way to move stuff (and therefore people) is with aerial ropeways – or gondolas. They also have the lowest environmental impact, because you only need a tower every few hundred metres, rather than a concrete pathway or steel rails, and animals go around the gondolas very easily. No more dead kangas on the side of the path.
We could run the ropeways in direct lines between town centres, not having to consider the geography, either. Nearly as good as a helicopter.
With only a few people in each gondola, you get extra privacy, too. Imagine the intrigues and plots that could be hatched at 30 metres above the ground.
With a bit of design, we might even develop personal gondolas that you could drive to a town centre, then hook up and float across town.
