E.L.K 18 December 2008 55

Hi all,  I’m putting together an independent warehouse artspace in Fyshwick. If any arty types out there who are looking for accommodation/studio space might be interested, please contact me at elkstencils@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Luke

Throw in a few tastefully posed nudes, pouring raw sewage into a kiddy pool, and you’d have something you could pass off as a comment on modern society, though.

Oh well, can’t blame a bloke for trying..

Maybe if I soaked them in menstrual blod, and set fire to bits of them (ala Tracy Emin) then they’d be ok? 😉

Once I had a butchers at the comments, i seen you was mickey mouse.

(Landscapes are much too old hat)

“No worries” as you colonials would say!

Thanks for the enlightenment, and thanks for dealing with the missinterpretations and missrepresentations of my original post.

Got any room for a few shoddy landscape photos? (Or is that too “old hat?”)

Sure you can drop in PB, it is a not for profit venture but hopefully in time it will fund itself, cheers Pommy

You dont have to be an artist, but it would help. I’ve got a place lined up and I’m looking for 2 people to move in, its $400 a week but hopefully by providing workshops and events the space will eventually pay for itself, without having to worry if we’ve been factored into the budget or not

I’ve never heard of such a venture, but I hope it is profitable for you Luke. When it’s set up can anyone drop in? I’d like to see an “artspace” for myself.

Best wishes on your enterprise,

PB.

Will this space involve a studio area of any kind? I’d love a place where I could regularly do photoshoots in front of a white backdrop and would happily get involved in the project if that’s a possibility. I’m sure there are other photographers out there who would be happy to share in the costs and or rent it from you, E.L.K … ?

I’ll type this slowly for you Jim so there isn’t any confusion.

Pommy did not get the concept of an “independent warehouse artspace”.

There are many things in Australian cultural life that are different from how they are in the UK. This appears to be one of them. Just because these spaces exist in the UK it doesn’t automatically mean that Pommy is across what it means.

You’re doing your damnedest at being patronising. It’s a pity, because your argument doesn’t make any sense.

You’re saying that “PB didn’t understand the concept of artspaces because the concept is a specific to Australian cultural life”, and then going on to recognise that the concept isn’t actually specific to Australian cultural life but was introduced via England. There isn’t any difference between how things are in Australia and the UK on this issue.

Do you really not get it? Shall I draw you a diagram or something?

How about:

A = B

A ? B

Is it clearer now?

Please forgive my stupidity,

I don’t have artistic talent however I want to let you know that I find your decision not to rely on coerced funding very admirable. If there are ways that non artists can assist, please let us know.

“Are you really trying to say that ‘artspace’ is a peculiarly Australian or Canberra concept?”

No Jim it is just a comment on a conceptual art piece perpetuated by me through multiple threads that has no real relevance to the this thread.

But Canberra does have a tradition of “artspace’s”. We had one in Mort st many years ago. The brick works still has artists. Queanbo is going strong with a few.

Jim, I lived in the UK for 42 years, and I hand on heart can honestly say I’d never heard the term before.

Gobbo Gobbo 1:42 pm 18 Dec 08

I should have added …

But by all means, jump all over him whenever he posts. 🙂

Happy festives to you.

Thanks ELK.

That’s mainly what I was wondering.

Cool. it sounds like it has a lot of potential.

Best of luck with it.

People from England don’t understand English?

When did this happen? Was it on the news?

Peterh has the issue in a nut shell Mr Jones.

People who have not lived in Australia for long, might find things a bit different from where they used to live and not understand the concepts.

Deary me.

*shakes head in dismay at all the ‘locals’.*

Artspace as a concept was popularised in England (most notably Soho) long before it arrived in Australia. A quick search of google UK (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=artspace&btnG=Google+Search&meta=cr%3DcountryUK|countryGB) reveals that damn near every city, borough and suburb has an artspace.

Are you really trying to say that ‘artspace’ is a peculiarly Australian or Canberra concept?

Independant: means not affiliated with a larger controlling unit. In this situation I’m assuming independent from big business and the government also probably run by the people that are using it.

Warehouse: A big spaces that was previously used for storing stuff.

Art space: A Space that artists can use to Create, Collaborate on or display artworks.

So a sort of studio cum gallery with a collaborative usage. That was my original thought, but I didn’t want to embarrass myself.

So will Luke charge for use of teh space, is it a profit making venture?

Given this…

‘Personally I too hate tagging, I also hate being referred to as a “graffiti artist”.’

Will your art space be open to graf artists or will it purely be a space for stencil artists and culture jammers etc?

Curious.

Hey tonka,

I should have elaborated, I dont like being referred to as a “graffiti artist” because I’m not one, nothing against writers. Tagging without any artistic merit is not only vandalism but very fucking annoying.

I’d actually prefer “graffiti artists” to move into this space

I don’t see a need to be rude… PB only asked a question.

Hope my answer helped.

My thanks
