No Jim it is just a comment on a conceptual art piece perpetuated by me through multiple threads that has no real relevance to the this thread.

But Canberra does have a tradition of “artspace’s”. We had one in Mort st many years ago. The brick works still has artists. Queanbo is going strong with a few.

I’ll type this slowly for you Jim so there isn’t any confusion.

Pommy did not get the concept of an “independent warehouse artspace”.

There are many things in Australian cultural life that are different from how they are in the UK. This appears to be one of them. Just because these spaces exist in the UK it doesn’t automatically mean that Pommy is across what it means.

Artspace as a concept was popularised in England (most notably Soho) long before it arrived in Australia. A quick search of google UK (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=artspace&btnG=Google+Search&meta=cr%3DcountryUK|countryGB) reveals that damn near every city, borough and suburb has an artspace.

So a sort of studio cum gallery with a collaborative usage. That was my original thought, but I didn’t want to embarrass myself.

I should have elaborated, I dont like being referred to as a “graffiti artist” because I’m not one, nothing against writers. Tagging without any artistic merit is not only vandalism but very fucking annoying.

I’d actually prefer “graffiti artists” to move into this space

I’m not sure what the Société Républicaine des Arts is but there are a few places round the world like the one that is proposed. The ones i know of are a music focused space in Sydney called ‘The Pits’ a Circus Warehouse in Melbourne and ‘The Catacomb’ in Germany which is also a circus focused art space.

I don’t see a need to be rude… PB only asked a question.

In simple terms they’re generally people who will use/twist corporate advertising such as billboards to present a subversive or ironic message, or present a variation of that message with an ironic or symbolic twist. Some of the American guys are really good.

Very popular in the states but outside melbourne I don’t know ther’s much going on here in Oz outside of Melbourne.

There is/used to be a group in Sydney called ‘buga up’ who did some great works on billboards in Sydney in the 80s. Apparently they’re still going but I haven’t seen anything from them for a while.

Phys FX – you keep banging on about the one inequality against men that you have identified (a minister for women), even though you don’t actually want or need a minister for men. So I’m not sure what your point is.

I just read about this on face book and it sounds fantastic. I know of a few places like this in Syd which are really great, so i hope it takes off well.

One Place in Sydney which is more music oriented is really amazing they have a big practice space and some smaller rooms for recording. The bit i really love about this place is at the back of the warehouse they have a small room with enough bunks to sleep around 8 people which they rent to touring bands for only $5 per person for the weekend.

That place is really great for Canberra acts that want to play in Syd but can’t afford to stay in a hotel.

ELK. You go for it. Finding the right space in Canberra is hard. Especially with commercial rent being as it is. Queanbeyan seems to get its fair share of art spaces. You might like to talk to Peter Swain of P&C Diesel repairs. He has been thinking along the same lines and has held some shows in his workshop. What kind of Artist mix where you thinking about.

I would love a sunny room to do make memorial cards for dead pets.

Can anyone inform me what an “artspace” is? Is it a gallery? A studio? A room for meditation?

M16 is also funded by Government grants, and ELK’s said he’s looking to set it up independently.

I have found a wall I would really love you to do some work on. Unfortunately I don’t own the wall, I just stare at it when I am in the gym every morning. It has tag-lines all over it, but your artwork would be so much better to look at that the tags.
