Ex Belconnen coach will get Raiders job

By Ralph - 10 April 2006 14

The Canberra Raiders will tomorrow officially announce the signing of current North Queensland Cowboys assistant coach (and ex coach of the Belconnen Warriors), Neil Henry, to replace the outgoing Matthew Elliott from next year.

Despite having the pick of outstanding former domestic and international coaches nominating for the position, the Raiders have decided to throw a bone to one of their olde boys. However, current Cowboys coach Graeme Murray has nothing but praise for Henry – who will also be assisting Mal Meninga as an assistant coach for the Queensland Origin side.

The Raiders went down to the Bulldogs 30-12 yesterday, in what was one of their poorest performances of the past couple of seasons. A match summary is available at Foxsports.

Best of luck to Neil.

Maybe he can bring down a thurston or someone of that ilk to inject that spark.. not likely…but it would be nice

Yes, ex West Belconnen player, and former Raiders (reserves).

Ah, West Belconnen Leagues Club. One of my locals.

Am I correct in thinking that Neil Henry played in the first years of the Raiders?

Whatever the case, he must be doing something right up north with the cowboys as they are blitzing everyone.

Hopefully he can bring a few of the top of the ladder cowdudes down here with him.

Ralph 8:32 pm 10 Apr 06

Yep, thanks for the correction – champ.

WEST Belconnen Warriors.

The team formerly known as Belconnen United morphed into what’s now known as Gungahlin Bulls

True, but the Raiders haven’t bent over backwards to keep some of these players. Think the Monaghans and Jamaal Lolesi. They did try their hardest to keep Ruben Wiki but we now know the Warriors are salary cap cheats.

We sign Weyman up and now he’s out for the season after one game – china doll.

I’m very sceptical about this latest move by the Raiders, but don’t think it is cause for concern… I mean we can only go one step lower on the ladder.

The Raiders don’t need to attract star players from elsewhere, they’ve proven in the past that their recruitment and development program is solid. The problem is that all our good players get poached and we get a one-eyed-python up the tailpipe. Count the number of NRL teams with an ex-raider on their roster and tell me I’m wrong!

Money isn’t an issue Thumper – The Raiders/Qbn Leagues Club do nicely out of owning Gungahlin Raiders, the Mawson Club, about 3 leagues clubs in south Queensland, the Jindabyne Hotel, the old Royals Rugby Club and the Braddon Club….

And coaches are not under the salary cap either. I would have thought spending big on getting a big name proven coach would be more likely to attract half decent players than signing a neville, even if he is ex-local…

Thumper 1:05 pm 10 Apr 06

An odd choice yes, but maybe they just couldn’t afford anyone else.

kimba 12:48 pm 10 Apr 06

Can’t believe the choice…….I used to be a ten year season ticket holder but gave up on them during the Super League and never been back. The appointment of Henry is another backwards step.

Good on the Raiders for giving someone with a bit of local knowledge a go i say.

Ralph 9:55 am 10 Apr 06

Agree.

Raiders management are a bunch of clowns.

Great work by the Raiders. The signing of an unknown low profile coach – yeah, that will get the big names to sign up…

I was at the game yesterday, and the first half was abysmal. Whingeford might have issues with his tackling, but his urgency around the ruck was missing.

Learoyd-Lahrs had a crack – can he play in the centres? Two skinny white boys doesn’t intimidate opposition centres. The Dogs have size and speed – the Raiders have Howell the Turnstyle…
Carney needs to pull his head out of his bum and realise he is not a superstar one man show. He has a long way to go to being a good 80 halfback rather than a 5 minute superstar.
I’ve got to say I’m glad Souths are in the comp or we would be the shortest price Spoon favourites in history.
ps – Hope Adam Mogg is ok – that hit was nasty…
