QT Canberra will never be the same. Tomorrow, more than 250 FASHKIDS will descend upon the hotel, hoping to secure a spot as a tiny model at this year’s FASHFEST—little bundles of nerves from age 4 to 10 who will walk and pose in front of two judges.

This is the first major kid’s model casting FASHFEST has held and the team say they were overwhelmed at the size and speed of the response. Within seconds of the registration form being uploaded onto the FASHFEST website, parents were ‘on it’.

FASHFEST is holding the casting because the 2017 event has two segments dedicated to fashion for children, another first. Around 24 tiny models are needed.

Although the casting is serious business for FASHFEST, the day is designed to be relaxed, says Andrea Hutchinson.

Andrea, a co-founder of FASHFEST and HAUS Models, is also mum to young Noah and Mia, so she knows a thing or two about little ones.

‘We’re keen for the kids who participate to enjoy the day, meet new friends and have heaps of fun,’ Andrea says. ‘We’re looking for cute models confident enough to walk down a long runway at FASHFEST in front of hundreds of guests to live music.’

So what will the FASHKIDS get up to tomorrow?

After finalising their registration, the kids will be assigned a modelling audition number and then head into a mini coaching session with FASHFEST’s Malinda Cole and Alyssa Broomby, who will try their best to get the wannabe models organised and ready to walk.

‘We’ll explain what they’ll have to do and get their confidence levels up,’ says Malinda. ‘Some kid’s may have modelled before, but many won’t have and we don’t want the casting to be a negative experience. We’ll be ready for giggles, we’ll be ready for nerves, and we’ll be ready just in case there are a few tears.’

Then it will be time for the FASHKIDS to walk up and down a makeshift runway, by themselves and perhaps in pairs, to music provided by DJ Hamish, FASHFEST’s Music Coordinator. Nervous parents (and no doubt some grandparents) will be seated on the sidelines providing support.
Tip You’re It!, a kids fashion, furniture and décor shop in Braddon, will showcase several cool labels on FASHFEST’s opening night, 28 September, including Neon Kite, Nununu and Minouche.

NOMIKO, a new independent fashion label, will showcase closing night, 30 September. NOMIKO was created by Andrea and her husband Clint Hutchinson. ‘The label is about quality, durable fabrics,’ says Andrea. ‘We’ll be rolling out a unique collection of gender specific and unisex clothing that is comfortable and stylish. We love the idea of kids wearing fashion that adults would wear.’

Andrea and Clint teased guests with a short appearance by their kid’s label at last year’s FASHFEST. This year will be their first complete collection.

FASHFEST is being held at the National Convention Centre Canberra with six shows held over three nights (28 September to 30 September. Tickets on sale now: www.fashfest.com.au
