The man killed when a tree fell on him during Friday’s storm turns out to have been one of the gardeners at the Lodge.
The Canberra Times’s coverage of this is here and here.
Apparently Athol Sellers, 62, had strong views on trees and believed eucalypts were not suited to the suburban environment in Canberra because of the dangers they posed — such as falling on people.
Yesterday evening the ABC reported the Prime Minister John Howard, who sometimes resides in the Lodge, paid tribute to Mr Sellers, noting his service and calling him a delightful man.
“To his wife Lorraine, to whom he was married for 40 years, and to their two children Mark and Margaret, and to their two grandchildren, I extend the sympathy of myself and my wife Janette,” he said.
