Hugh Veness named

By johnboy - 17 August 2012 39

The ABC has one of Canberra’s worst kept secrets:

A Canberra psychiatrist struck off for making sexual advances on a patient and over prescribing her drugs can now be named.

The ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal this week lifted a non-publication order that prevented Dr Hugh Veness from being named.

Earlier this year the tribunal found Dr Veness guilty of professional misconduct and cancelled his registration after hearing evidence from the Australian Medical Board.

Where’s Mr Gillespie? Shouldn’t he be explaining to us how this poor bloke didn’t really do anything wrong…?

Has anyone ever seen Gillespie and Veness in the same room together?

I can see it now:

MrGillespie:”Well maybe he HAD TO PLY HER WITH DRUGS to get HER INTERESTED in HIM. Because we all know what women want from MEN is DRUGS and MONEY!!! She was probably the one who started it anyway, with the WAY SHE WORE THAT SHIRT you could what SHE WANTED?!! And now the poor guy has LOST HIS JOB thanks to a woman who’s probably growing fat off DOZENS OF CHILD-SUPPORT PAYMENTS!! It’s a disgrace, and another reason other THAN PLASTIC BAGS to vote for the NO MORE BLOODY IMMIGRANTS party in the upcoming ELECTION!”

Ah desire has a mind of it’s own and apparently even a psychiatrist could not resist the temptation. Is it just possible that they’re human after all?

Are you a rapist, then, seeking endorsement? None available from normal people.

Is this a rhetorical question?

Out of interest, and assuming only genuine motives, how does, or can, a doctor go about initiating a relationship with a patient?

If the doctor is a psychiatrist, never. The RANZCP Code of Ethics states that a sexual relationship between a psychiatrist and current *or former* patient is never ethical. And they have a stated zero tolerance for sexual boundary violations, so doctors found guilty of this will be expelled and can never be reinstated.

Prescribing Rohypnol would be a good start.

I would imagine that would require the patient to no longer be a patient. In other words, as long as there is a professional relationship, it has to remain professional.

In the real world I suspect that it would be pretty suss, even then.

Someone correct me if I’m rong.

Would it have not been better to change at least one of those to prey on?

Disgraceful by the AAT to have his name suppressed for so long. They seem to be working against the public interest. And shame on the Government & Greens for allowing it. It seems in Canberra if you are a dodgy Doctor or Lawyer it is very hard for the public to find out. So much for open & accountable government..

I say the repercussions of Dr Venness’ actions are not sufficient. IMO, criminal charges are necessary.

We are looking at someone who, looking for his 5th wife, decided to predate on our most vulnerable. When his true colors began to show in 2009, when his former lover, married woman Dr Tania Lioulios, complained that he had illegally prescribed her OxyContin, and made allegations of Dr Veness’ violence and illicit drug use, he again abused his position of power.

Dr Tania Lioulios took her life in the back of an ACT correction-services van, after attending court for the matter.

Dr Veness was allowed, by our government and by the Psychiatrist registration board, to continue practicing in the ACT. Dr Veness then set about looking for another victim. Our government failed to protect not only Dr Tania Lioulios, but also every subsequent patient.

I say criminal charges MUST proceed. There needs to be heavier repercussions for those who PREDATE on our most VULNERABLE.
