Keep the booze flowing for better tourism reviews

By johnboy - 16 June 2009 19

Visit Canberra’s had a little coup bringing an AAP journo here for a junket tour of the cocktail bars after which the journo appears to have gone away very impressed, albeit dropping around 300,000 people off the population of the city.

It’s had a run in the major league Stuff.co.nz travel section under the headline: “Sexy little city Canberra comes of age”

Aside from saying Canberra is a city of 40,000 people the author also lists “some of the hippest establishments Canberra has to offer” as: Parlour Wine Room, Hippo Bar, Knightsbridge Penthouse, and The Julip Lounge.

I’ll agree they’re all very nice (more so if someone else is buying the drinks), but are there any names you’d add to that list?

What’s Your opinion?

i hesitate to add it after the tweed affair, but i’d also add wig and pen as nowhere else, sydney and melbourne included, do you get these brews.

and think he drunkenly left a ‘0’ off the population, having seen it bigger than it really is first…

considering that i don’t go to bars or pubs for the booze these days, but rather the atmosphere, I really like the phoenix. The band nights are great. I enjoy interaction between the patrons and the non drinkers like me. I really like the level of customer service that you receive by the bar staff.

Back on topic please. And if we can keep suggestions serious that would be nice.

As I recall JB, it wasn’t an RA-sponsored event then, but that didn’t stop it from being a good evening for those who attended, and made for better relationships between some contributors (Danman, Thumper, Aeek, others I can’t remember). What’s with the “our way or the highway” business?

jim, so does the Kambah inn. But you wouldn’t take tourists there…

No but an anthropologist would find it an absolute hoot…

On the srious side of the fence now I think Trinity definitely should get a mention.

Although there is a cocktail they used to make there called ‘Absinthe Minded’ that is sadly no longer on the menu… That drink used to knock me on my date many times!!! It was GREAT!

Speaking of the Harcourt, it’s been a year since we had a little RA get-together out there. (I remember because it was bloody cold outside…) Anyone interested?

Magpies.

Thumper 3:45 pm 16 Jun 09

George Harcourt. Okay, it’s hardly hip but it’s warm and inviting and quite comfortable in an old English sort of way.

The Old Canberra Inn and the Mitchell Tavern.
