Canberra’s first dedicated indoor cycling studio, Psycle Life, has just opened on the Kingston Foreshore, and is offering three free classes to early bird customers.
Each class is 45 to 50 minutes long and includes a warm up followed by a variety of climbs, jumps, sprints, tapbacks (standing ab crunches), weights, cool down and stretching. The rider is in control of resistance and speed.
Worried about being seen wobbling all over the place? Fear not, the classes are run in the dark, and adaptable to all fitness levels. The studio will run beginner classes once a month.
With a focus on “spiritual fitness”, Psycle Life offers 1, 5, 10 or 20 ride packs for its 45 minute indoor cycling classes that involve peddling, handlebar push-ups and light weight-lifting combined with a touch of spiritualism and pumping music. The first class for any participant is free.
The more you pre-purchase, the cheaper it is per-class. A single class pass is $25 and expires after 30 days. The five-class pack is $115 (valid for 60 days from purchase), the 10-pack is $210 (lasts 90 days) and the 20-pack $380 (expires after 120 days).
There will be occasional special deals on packs, and gift vouchers are available.
Would-be riders must book in for classes, though you can cancel up till three hours before. You can reserve a specific bike via the studio’s website, psycle.life, too.
The boutique studio operators recommend arriving 15 minutes early on the first visit to ensure the bike you’ll use is set to the correct height, though five minutes before class is fine thereafter.
While cycling shoes are not essential, they are recommended. The studio’s Keiser M3i bikes are equipped with dual sided pedals to accommodate either type of footwear.
Baggy shorts or pants are not the go. You will need to brave the lycra or at least wear fairly fitted sporting attire.
Participants have access to a tracking system called Performance IQ which monitors performance data including heart rate, calories, power, and RPM in real time using group display or an app. After a workout, the system allows user to check their progress on a computer or phone with the ability to store and sort previous class performances.
There are changing rooms, showers and toilets on site, with free lockers, towels and water available.
Psycle Life is generally open from 5.45am until after the last class of the day (normally around 8pm).
