Melbourne may claim it’s the coffee capital of the world, but according to travel app Wotif’s ‘Uniquely Aussie Awards’, the best flat white can be found at the Cupping Room in Canberra.

The annual awards are voted for by Australians and seek to highlight the best local gems around the country.

“Despite Melbourne being the unofficial coffee capital of the world, it’s the nation’s capital that claims this win. The Cupping Room, ACT, is home to the best aromatic flat white, brewed by award-winning roasters from the highest quality and sustainable green coffee beans. This is the perfect place for a pitstop on your next road trip,” Wotif said.

The Cupping Room’s Cameron Thomas said the award was a huge source of pride for the cafe.

“Winning the award for the best flat white means a lot to our team. Everyone here works super hard and is super proud of everything we do and the care we take into our coffee, and we want to make memorable coffee experiences for our customers,” he said.

Cameron said the award also reflects the care the team takes to make a more memorable experience than your usual coffee.

“[We’re] a bit different from your traditional cafe,” he said.

“The Cupping Room’s flat white is the best in Australia because we take a lot of care in our coffee.”

The Cupping Room is a cafe project from ONA Coffee, another local brand that has gained recognition on the national and international stage. ONA’s founder Saša Šestić started his coffee roastery out of his garage in Canberra and has gone on to win several prestigious industry awards.

“Speciality coffee is our thing. We provide a range of house blends you can choose from with your milk coffees as well, so not only do you pick a flat white, we have a few different house blends, all consisting of different tasting notes,” Cameron said.

While the Cupping Room is “a bit of a Canberra icon”, Cameron said the award will help attract more new customers.

“The Cupping Room is one of the older cafes in Canberra. We’re coming up to 10 years here. We were one of the first cafes in Canberra to introduce specialty coffee into the scene,” he said.

“Winning the award, we hope to get the word out a little bit more about the products we serve here and attract some more eyes and ears to the amazing coffee experiences.”

Best Hot Springs: N/A (unfortunately)
Best Sandwich: Little Luxton, Gordon

It’s funny. The first time I went there and ordered a flat white they said “we don’t do flat whites”. I wonder if they will accept the award. Pretentious, Moi?

Great coffee but they’d also win WORST customer service in Australia too!
