We used to believe that nobody was really ‘from Canberra’. It was a town of floating public servants, in and out for a few years. As we’ve matured and generations have come to love the place, our stories have grown.

We’re looking for your photos and your stories to help us trace that history and lay down some new tales for the Canberrans to come.

Region Media has a network of social media sites, including The Canberra Page, where we reach all the way back to the city’s foundation in 1913 and beyond. The Canberra Page has one of the largest social media audiences in the ACT, with over 98,000 Facebook followers, and the Region Media following across all our social media platforms totals more than 350,000.

We source our Canberra Page photographs from a number of collections, notably the National Library, the National Archives and the ACT Heritage Library. We always work closely with these institutions, act in good faith and develop strong working relationships.

It’s about being neighbourly, and that’s where you come in. We’ve been thinking for a while about giving our social media space on RiotACT and The Canberra Page to photos of this beautiful city and the surrounding region, and we’d love your submissions for that.

We’ll pick a photograph every week or two and headline our social media pages with the image.

Please email us your photos of beautiful Canberra regional landscapes, iconic locations and images – anything you think might make a good headline photo for the top of a page visited by tens of thousands of readers every day.

We’re also looking for more than just pretty images. We’d also like to delve further into your stories, because people make our sites really pop. So if you have family photos, workplace photos, historical photos or anything else with a good Canberra yarn attached, please submit those too.

And tell us a bit of the background to your photo. Where and when are you all having that family picnic? Who is in this photo of the time before the Lake filled, or when everything beyond O’Connor was dairy farms?

It’s easy to submit photos and story ideas. Just email us and include some details about who or what is in the photo (or perhaps, why it’s a mystery).

Local historian and Canberra fan Marg Wade curates the page for us and is always on the hunt for stories that bring us all together. We’d love you to come on the journey with us.

Region Media is completely locally owned and run, and all our stories come from here. Access will always be free: there will never be a paywall or a subscription button on our content.
