lyneham pide hut lunchbox

The Lyneham Pide Hut is under new management. On one level that’s a shame as I rather liked the old management. On the other hand they new guys are offering a $10 lunchbox.

There’s a choice of chicken or lamb.

For that you get a fair whack of salad, including tabouleh and a whack of hummus, rice, and a great big pile of meat fresh off the spit.

With garlic and chilli sauce I was set for a breath catastrophe.

But it is a truly excellent feed for the price.

The rice works particularly well with the meat and the sauces.

With handy parking in Lyneham it’s worth stopping in for.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

This was the worst turkish pide place in Canberra for a number of years. Poor food, slow service and generally dirty. Not a patch on Yarralumla. Good to see new owners have arrived.

What you seem to have there is the meat served in the Iskender style, that is with a yoghurt sauce and a tomato (chilli) sauce drizzled over. In Turkey, Iskender kebab is a lamb dish and the meat is served sitting on top of crispy cubes of bread that have soaked up some of the juices that drip off the spit. It’s a dish of great awesomeness. In Australia, I’ve only ever had it served that way once, at an ill-fated restaurant near the pool in Woden. Chatted with the chef who was shipped over from Turkey to cook there. Unfortunately, that restaurant didn’t last long – that building seems to curse all restaurants that open in it. Generally, Iskender in Oz is served over rice, and it’s a pale imitation.

An interesting thing is that the bread that is sold here as Turkish bread is absolutely nothing like the bread in Turkey. And those delicious kabak mucveri – zucchini balls – that are in pretty much every Turkish restaurant here, I’ve never seen in Turkey. They have patties there, but not the deep fried puffy version.

Turkish food is Turkey is just fantastic, and now I want to go again.

all sounds like ‘chinese’ food in restaurants here – food in china is entirely different, nothing akin to what you get here, and delicious. had ‘real’ sweet and sour fish’ in regional china a while back – would never countenance ordering it here.

i suspect this is true of many cuisines…

BEST place in canberra for a turkish pide.

Really? I’m in Lyneham, but I have people here swear by the place in Yarralumla as the best for pides.

I partially echo this. Really? I’m in Lyneham…. but I stopped getting pides here years ago as the spinach & fetta one always tasted like they didn’t wash the dirt off the spinach!

I will return for another go now it’s under new management however, given the Civic pide houses are !&!(@&(!*&(@&! rubbish these days (when they used to be awesome).

Howabout a $6-$8 lunch review?

Are you referring to BYO?

It can be done – VIP Pies on AlingaKuna whatever street – start with a curry pie and complete with a hedgehog. Then there is IndoFoods opposite ACT Legislature, a tasty selection with rice at $8ish bucks. Look for 80s decor off eastern Ldn Circuit- always a good sign (BayTree Cafe, Sunbeam Cafe, etc.)

Turkish Pide House in the city do a similar lunchbox. Chicken or Lamb with salad, rice and your choice of sauce, about $8-$9.

I had a horrid experience last year with a kebab from there. Possibly it was worse than Ali baba. Maybe a bad day?

Worse than Ali Baba? Now there’s a sentence I never thought I’d read.
(up until the last time – and it will remain the last time – I darkened Ali Baba’s doorstep, I thought “badly packed kebab” was just an hilarious euphemism)

honestly dont know how they still have so many shops open.

this place has been my staple for the past four years as the BEST place in canberra for a turkish pide.

sad to see the old management go as they were such a lovely couple. i definitely look forward to trying it out under new management, and hope they leave an impression like the old guys did!
