A man was allegedly in a crash involving a stolen luxury car before he started throwing what turned out to be $10,000 of cash in bags onto the roofs of homes along a residential street.
Brent Ian Guerin, a 35-year-old of no fixed address, was handed numerous charges before he was refused bail when he faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday (10 April).
ACT Policing said an allegedly stolen Mercedes GLC63 crashed into the front of a home in Crace – causing significant damage – at about 8 pm on 3 April.
The people inside the home at the time were not injured, while a man and a woman were spotted fleeing the car after the incident. Witnesses followed the pair and began recording the man as he fled.
“Bags that had allegedly been carried by the man were located on nearby rooftops by police and were found to contain approximately $10,000 in cash, a small quality of illicit substances and a ‘taser’,” a police spokesperson alleged.
At about 9 pm on the same night, the same man allegedly went into a home in Cocoparra Crescent in Crace, walked into the kitchen, demanded car keys and a phone from a resident, then stole the resident’s Ford Fiesta and fled.
Shortly afterwards, police spotted the Ford speeding through the intersection of Barton Highway and Gundaroo Drive. The car was found in Flynn the next day.
Officers in Operation TORIC arrested Mr Guerin and a 33-year-old woman from Mawson at a Braddon hotel on Tuesday (9 April).
When they did, he was allegedly found with about $8900 in cash, approximately 8.6 grams of heroin and approximately 25 grams of methamphetamine.
A green Holden Commodore was also seized for further forensic analysis.
Mr Guerin has been handed multiple charges over the alleged incident, including drug trafficking, burglary, theft, resisting a public official, possessing property suspected of being the proceeds of crime and two counts each of dangerous driving and damaging property.
He did not enter pleas when he briefly appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday and his lawyer, Giordano Borzuola of Legal Aid, said he would not apply for bail.
Magistrate Alexandra Burt remanded Mr Guerin in custody to face court on 2 May.
The 33-year-old woman was charged with riding in a stolen motor vehicle and was granted bail when she faced court.
