A man in his 30s has died after fleeing police in Yass last night (22 March).

Police officers were patrolling the town centre of Yass when they attempted to stop a vehicle on Laidlaw Street at about 11:45 pm.

When the driver failed to stop, police activated their lights in pursuit of the driver.

The vehicle was discovered a short distance away after it left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The driver, a man believed to be aged 34, died at the scene.

A NSW Police spokesperson said in a statement that a critical incident team from Monaro Police District will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The investigation will be subject to independent review.

“All information will be provided to the Coroner,” the statement said.

Police would not comment on whether any other factors contributed to the man’s death.

“No further details are available at this time; however, police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.”

Anyone who can assist police should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
